Tap. Nice dark brown pour with a wispy tan head. Roasted malt, milk chocolate, some dark fruit notes, and coffee nose. Flavor is roasty, dark bread(pumpernickel), coffee and chocolate. Pretty nice stuff!

Draft. A really good porter. Plenty of Earth, roast, coffee and nuts. The body was medium and the finish was dry, somewhat chalky, and bitter sweet.

Tap at Pizza Port San Clemente. Pier rat porter. Pours deep cola to brune with a deeper mocha head. Nose is thicker roast and muted caramel/coffee. Taste is quite bitter, roasty, semisweet chocolate. Bits of cardboard in the finish but overall very clean on the palate. Perhaps a bit soily, earthy, raw. Very simple, no nonsense robust porter with proclivity towards to bitter end of the spectrum for style. Easily sessionable. I can see why it would win GABF Gold. But I think I’ll just take another Dawn til Dusk.

24/05/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (tap).

OLD gabf rating. Burnt up chocolate and great. I love it. A little wet on the tongue but otherwise awesome. I dig. Candy at end.

Draught at the brewpub. Black beer with a beige head. Roasty aroma with lots of coffee-like notes. Dry and roasty flavor without much sweetness or body. Clean and drinkable stuff but could maybe be a little more robust and sweeter.

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2011 On draft (guest)

The real reason for coming was to try this porter. Not disappointed, I was almost tempted to take home a growler except for the large backlog and the rather steep price. I am amazed that it was still on almost a week later. I guess word did not get around the Cleveland area fast enough unlike the Bell’s Oracle that was available later in the month.

Aroma and appearance - An inky black body was fluid and perky. A dusty tan head looked as if someone had poured the beer then put it in a forgotten corner for a few years to age. Smoke filled black coffee provided a deep, dark, and mysterious atmosphere. Smelling like an urban alleyway around midnight (but without the ’local’ water) it asked for more reflection.

Flavor and palate - The dry smoky mouthfeel flowed like water over a eager tongue. Mellow and soft it was easy on the palate for the style. Even after the end of a generous pour the palate could have take another pint easily. Hops gently tickle the throat from time to time to remind you this isn’t timid. Overall it compares well with other examples you are likely to find on the West Coast.

Porter. Tap at haymarket... Pours a cola hue, lighter edges and topped with a light beige head... Tasty coffee nose with tons of roast and lighter chocolate undertones... Thinner bodied with somewhat of a residual sweetness. 8/4/7/3/13
