A double IPA that packs in the malt and hops.

Pours clear amber with a nice white top that stays. Aroma is fruity but some rougher hops are also there. Earthy and down-to-earth IPA. Taste is very strong and powerful, hope overdose in a second, lots of very bitter stuff, rough and probably intentionally unbalanced. Reminds me mud, autumn and some frozen apples swinging on a tree. I forgot to mention - its also pretty good!

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. Explosion if tropical fruit and citrus with a moderate woody aspect. Slight hazy dark orange with full white head. Taste is strong citrus, orange with forest floor and pine. Bread and slight caramel in moderate amounts balance the beer well. Wonderful.

On tap at Beer Baron. It pours a golden orange color with an off white head. The aroma is dank and bready with some orange and a little cookie-like malt. The flavor is spicy/floral hops with some cookie, light caramel, dank, citrus and pine. Pretty enjoyable and great hop character, but a little too heavy on the palate.

Tasted on 11/12/11 on draft at the Three Floyds Anniversary party. Pours clear bright orange with an average white head that slowly recedes to a thin collar of lace. The nose is hoppy resin with a ton of citrus and some caramel malt. The flavor is tropical fruit, dank resin hops, citrus peel, and caramel. The body is medium and oily with tons of resin bitterness and tropical fruit hops.

"a bigger body than their regular ipa and black ipa...otherwise both of those beers are better. maybe a different hop profile, or maybe the hops in this beer had to battle the malt too much. quite good, but not quite great!"

After reading some of these comments I found a surprising amount of disparities. Poor Man’s has been a great double IPA for years. However; the English will find it hoppy and the east side of the US will not like the malt character. This is a legitimate west coast 2x IPA, honey color, high gravity, light body and grape-fruity! It’s as bitter as someone that you left at prom and just as amazing. Get a few

Keg at Pizza Port Carlsbad, 21/04/14. Clear golden with a moderate off white swirl which emulates a map of Africa. Nose is bitter grapefruit, citric pithdom, straw, lemon rind, hops, pine. Taste comprises sharp grapefruit, mineral bite, pine resin, orange pith, straw, mandarin. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi aggressive hop bitterness in the close. Decent approachable DIPA, the 10% doesn’t really make its presence known!

64oz growler from Pizza Port Carlsbad pours a clear honey color. Aroma is similar to PtE. Up front dank hops, resinous pine, with tropical fruits shining through. Pineapple, ripe orange, grapefruit. Some peach and apricot notes. First sip smacks you with hop bitterness followed by grapefruit rind, sweet tropical fruits with a solid malt backbone and lingering bitterness on the palate. A tinge of booziness but not overwhelming. Overall a solid west coast DIPA and the closest thing to PtE that Ive had. This really is the Poorman’s PtE with Pliney having a superior aroma and all around more well balanced but this is not too far off.
