A West-Coast IPA brewed with rye and German Carafa Special III black malt. This beer boasts a jet black color with a mild roasty finish that follows an explosive burst of American hops. Another collaborative beer between Julian Shrago and Pizza Port, this time with San Clementes award-winning brewer, Noah Regnery.

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2010 Sample at the brewpub. Pours black with a brownish tinge around the edges. Medium beige head that lasts awhile. Roasty aroma with grassy hops notes. Medium body with flavors of hops, roasted malt and a bit of citrus. The finish is hoppy with a lingering toasted bread aftertaste. Good brew all around.

Tap at PP/SC. Poured near black with gigantic sheety lace everywhere. Aroma of roasted malt, cocoa, muted citrus hops. Taste is a little lacing- lots of balance brings out little to no character, muted bitterness, some vegetal notes, black olives, mostly bready. Dry palate.

Draft. Blackish beer with a tan head. Light grapefruit aroma with malt. Light roasty, caramel, darker malt flavor with light chocolate and some grapefruit. Medium body. Light chocolate and caramel lingers with some hops.

Nose is nice and chocolatey with some roast too. Hops are floral and earthy and pretty damn noticeable. The pour is almost black with a nice off white head and sticky lacing. The flavor is a nice fresh burst of floral hops followed by some chocolate and roasted dark malt flavor. This is followed by more hoppy bitterness in the form of floral and earth. Nice lingering hop resins.

On tap at O’Briens. Quite hoppy, with roasted malt, bread, citrus, pepper, herbal hops, rye, and bitter finish. Really nice, I enjoyed it.

Very distinctive nose, less so for the flavor, but it’s a nice IPA, which is high praise from a malt-head like me. Thanks cquiroga, it was great meeting you. Bottle shared at RBSG 2009 grand tasting.

On tap at PP San Clemente. Poured a dark brown with a small, but creamy light brown/tan head. Aroma was pretty nice with roasted malt, earth, citrus, bread, cocoa and floral hops. Flavor had a pretty nice balance of roasted and IPA flavors, yet both elements were both fairly substantial. Some surprising coffee notes throughout. Some light yeasty and gum like elements. Above average for the black IPA style.
