SQNfan (591), Wheaton, Illinois, USA May 20, 2008 Bottle: Deep amber to brown in color with only some light lacing retaining. The nose shows sweet malt, grapefruit, herbs, pine, caramel and spice. In the mouth it is medium to full-bodied, sweet, rich and intense. The hops emerge on the finish which shows some bitterness. This is a well-balanced beer with the malt shining through in the midpalate and hops joining in toward the finish. tjthresh (1735), Greenfield, Indiana, USA May 20, 2008 22 ounce bottle from Capone’s. Pour is a darker red toward brown. The head is sort of dark beige with spotty lace. The nose has plenty of pungent hops, along with caramel/toffee, with underlying butterscotch. The flavor is features pine hops along with quite a bit of sweet caramel flavor that I’m not too much a fan of here. The palate is pretty full bodied with what seems to be an appropriate amount of carbonation. The finish seems a bit of the sweet side, but the bitterness is there as well. I guess that make it balanced. rudolf (1724), Buffalo, New York, USA May 19, 2008 Bottle, shared at the May 2008 tasting. Thanks Paul! Big piney nose, rich caramel, malt. Flavor is quite bitter, a decent amount of fruit, caramel, malt. Skyview (3930), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA May 19, 2008 Sampled during Cellar’s Wine & Spirits beer tasting and shared by Stine. Pours a clear reddish amber brew with a thin off-white head that has some good retention. Aroma of caramel malt, citrus zest hops, and a touch of grapefruit. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of caramel malt, some apple/pear fruit and some spiced hops. Finish is semi-dry, hoppy aftertaste that lingers after the finish. MrBendo (1039), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA May 19, 2008 Thanks to dunk for the bomber. A lovely clear orange/copper color with a small head. Aroma of big crystal malt with a slight grassy hop element. It’s hard to believe that the alcohol is so well hidden in a beer that’s basically an imperial amber. Medium-heavy body and finishes with a nice spice from the hops. But it’s a long way to make up for boring. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 19, 2008 Bottle at Rudy’s tasting May ’08. Strong sticky malt / hoppy aroma. Ruby brown, good sized white head. Intense taste - so bitter and intensely malty. Perfect balance of strong hops and aggressive malt. Long bitter linger. Bordering on DIPA territory here, this one got everything right for me. OSLO (823), Perth, Australia May 19, 2008 [Bottle, thanks Stine!] Pours red with a small off-white head. Aroma is mostly citrusy grapefruit from the hops and caramel malt. Taste is the same citrusy (grapefruit) hops and caramel with some decent sweetness to balance it out. Thick mouthfeel. Pretty good stuff. Juelze (889), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA May 17, 2008 My brother shared this with me, thanks Petrucci914!!! Pours a reddish amber color with little head. Aroma is of spicey hops, pine, caramel and citrus. Taste is the same but well laid out. I’ve had a lot of American Strong Ales as of late, and this one is probably the best put together. Aggressive but not over the top. Good shite.
