Beerlando (2282), Orlando, Florida, USA Apr 21, 2008 Pours a lightly hazy dark red color with a small, foamy, cream colored head. Scant, spotty traces of lacing mar the glass. The nose shows alot of resinous pine hop character up front, with a bit of citrus and floral mixed in as well. Caramel adds sweetness, while an alcoholic, medicinal note clouds things up a bit. Flavors follow suit, with caramel and toffee malts, resinous pine and spruce hops, and a touch of dry citrus and flowers. Perhaps a touch of cinnamon spice as well. Mouthfeel is syrupy and lacking carbonation, with a hot, medicinal feel. This beer just doesn’t do it for me at all. There are much better Imperial Reds out there. JorisPPattyn (5155), Antwerpen, Belgium Apr 21, 2008 Draught Small yellowish head, receding over pale chestnut beer. Hops and caramel, hopcake, (I know, I’m repeating myself... so are some Cal brewers), dry hop bales. Dry, medicinal taste, there’s a certain pharmaceutical that is similar, here ented on the dry hop flavour. Some caramel. Bit burning MF, slick, sticky. Avery Tomme A. interpretation of a hoppy beer. scrizzz (1246), kirkland, Washington, USA Apr 21, 2008 strong hop concentrate aroma with some dried raspberry there as well. dark toffee color, minimum head. yum. the softer yet balanced among itself malt allows for the intense hops to take over and shine. hell yeah. bitbucket (2025), Kirkland, Washington, USA Apr 19, 2008 Bomber. Pours lightly hazy dark copper with a scant off-white head. Sweet grapefruit and toffee nose, and you’ll find a bit of pine if you dig deep enough. Sweet medium body and moderate carbonation. Toffee and citrus taste that finishes semi-dry, nicely bitter, but somehow crisp at the same time. There’s a bit of alcohol warmth, but not what I’d expect for a beer at nearly 10%. joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA Apr 19, 2008 22oz Bottle
I got this in another great trade with errantnight, thanks Derek! Shark Attack Double Red pours like an amber ale should, amber. There is a good amount of haziness in there though. A one finger tan soapy head formed on the pour that quickly fell to a skimming with a thick ring but left excellent lacing on it’s way down.
Not quite what I expected out of the gate. There seems to be a big boozy, syrupy sweetness that really isn’t my thing. Alcohol fumes waft through the air with no regard. The saving grace is the pungent resin hoppiness. Can’t get enough resin hoppiness.
The flavor is, disappointingly, what the nose suggested. Alcohol is big andbrash right up front and the maltiness seems a little to sweet and syrupy. The resiny hops are there and seem to cover some of the faults up a bit but overall I’m pretty disappointed in the flavor of this beer.
The mouthfeel is actually a little thin. I know, I know I was talking about syrupy this and that but that was the sweetness talking. Mouthfeel isn’t bad but it’s not very good either.
I’m going to finish off this bomber and be done with this brew. The bomber is actually too much but I hate wasting beer.
Not one I would pick up again from Port Brewing. I really like the things I’ve tried from them but this just doesn’t do it for me.
4/13/08 SDalkoholic (1186), Chula Vista, California, USA Apr 18, 2008 Bottle from South Bay drugs. A deep tinted mahogany hue with a fat formation of foam for a head. The nose is tamed although there is detection of sweet malting and fresh juicy hops. Flavor is a fair share serving of hops under light notes of citrus but does also has a large malt backbone that is semi sweet. Leaves behind a dirty mouth feel and strong alcohol aftertaste. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Apr 18, 2008 Shared by Crosling, thanks dude. Poured a deep garnet color with a moderate beige head that diminished to a layer but left great lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, and some earthy, piny hops. Flavor of light caramel, some spice I can’t identify, and light resin and pine hops with some light citrus. Full on the palate, nice bitter finish. I bet this is awesome fresh, it would be nice to try. jpaliga10 (7), Indiana, USA does not count Apr 17, 2008 Poured a deep dark amber, but had very low carbonation. Head was nearly nonexistent. Aroma was strong and appetizing, while flavor followed through with every promise the scent had made. A great beer.
