Commercial Description:
Is it really safe to paddle out in our waters? It’s impossible to know for sure. What we do know is that this is an incredibly distinctive and bold American red ale that attacks your taste buds with lethal amounts of hops, which are balanced by a boat load of Crystal malt. If none of this fazes you, then maybe swimming in the shark filled waters is exactly where you belong. We’ll see you in the lineup!

Bottle (as Double Red). Pours cloudy brown-orange with no head. Sweet fruit nose, almost artificially fruity. Smells thick and sticky. Opens sweet with a huge hop bitterness, unbalanced with no real body or carbonation to break up the intensity of the flavor. Quite boring and unnecessarily over-the-top.

Taster at Stone 9th Anniversary Festival. Misty brown-amber with a nice foamy head, aroma is sweet with mucho hops. A decent amount of residual sweetness, piney hops and astringent bitterness finish. A very good strong ale, appropriate for the day.

Bottle. Pours dark amber red, small beige head. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, hops, and something a little burnt. Taste is similar with heay caramel, fruit accent, and bitter finish. Nice double red. Body is full and smooth. Overall, a solid brew.

22 oz recently bottled version. Port Brewing Shark Attack Double Red Ale. Kind of a lackluster appearance on the pour. Looks really syrupy, minimal carbonation and no head. Deep amber-brown color. Aroma is loads of caramel malts and grassy hops. Some citrus notes, nutmeg and toasted biscuit. Tongue-wrecking flavor with lots of hops bitterness and a mildly hot alcohol finish. Long lasting butterscotch and resiny hops on each sip. Pretty damn good, but it doesn’t seem fresh out of the bottle.

Dark hazy brown/red with a frothy tan head that leaves lace. Aroma is a combination of pine, alcohol, honey, cherry, excellent. Taste is very rich with pine, molasses, plum and roast. Very well balanced with sweet and heavy hops. Finishes with a dry bitter crisp. Perfectly balanced.

Bottle purchased @ Pizza Port, Solana Beach. This has to be one of the most interesting things I’ve ever tasted. Pours a very deep red with a small and quickly-dissipating white head. The aroma is heavy malt with hop notes detectable as well. Taste is vinious, with detectable malt and dark fruit with a hop finish. What an interesting, interesting beer....and a wonderful beer.

I decided to track this down because I am really digging this style lately thanks to Yulesmith, Dead by Dawn, Gordon, and Red Devil. The color is no surprise, reddish-amber with almost no head. The intiial aromas are of pine needles, not cones, serious hops. There is a slight caramel aroma as well. The taste is a blast of green, leafy hops that I enjoy. I cannot seem to find the malt backbone to this beer, just blistering hops. There is some astringency in the mouthfeel that needles the palate. Overall, a nice flavor and aroma but a sipper due to the ABV/mouthfeel. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-19-2008 03:42:46
