Q:What would happen if standout Port Brewing brewed a Lagunitas-style ASA?
A: It would be just a shade better than your average Lagunitas ASA, but nothing better than that. Tons of hops atop a metric assload of crystal malt is only so interesting even in the best of cases....

Light unclear medium orange amber color with a small to average, fizzy, fair lancing, fully diminishing, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to light heavy malty, caramel, vinous, moderate hoppy, orange, alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily - oily, carbonation is soft - flat, finish feel is light to moderate alcoholic. Very nice balanced. (190608)

Appearance is clear dark amber hue, no noticeable head, minimal lacing.
Smell is big caramel malts and toffee, big grassy hops, hint of alcohol heat.
Taste is dominated by huge caramel malts and big piney hops, some subtle floral/grassy tones, toffee, citrus, finishes bitter with slight warming alcohol.
Mouthfeel is medium-to-full-bodied, thick and creamy texture, moderate carbonation.
Drinkability is high, this is a nicely balanced amber ale with big malt and hop presence (Malt/Hop Bomb!), alcohol is well masked, I’m a fan of Imperial Red Ales and could drink this one all night long!

Aug 23, 2008 Pours a hazy rich brown/red with nominal head, and only a few soapy bubbles for lacing. Nose-sweet candied fruit and pine. Taste- initially very sweet caramel and then a wallop of hops- grassy, woody and pine. Finish is quite hot and dry. Impressive dry finish considering the initial sweetness. Very little carbonation and lighter in body than expected. This is a balls out beer- no question.

Aug 18, 2008 Bottle. Pours deep red with thick off white head. Aroma of malt and piney hops. Taste dominated by malt with slight grassy hops. Thick mouthfeel. Decent red ale.

Aug 16, 2008 Bottle. Ruby beer with a light tan head. Grapefruit/pine aroma with richer malts. Caramel, grapefruit/pine resin flavor with some nuttiness and richer malts. Medium-plus bodied. Grapefruit, pine and caramel linger. Good bitterness. Good aggressive balance between malt and hops (it’s not a "balanced" beer, but it comes together nicely).
