| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 27, 2009 Bottle:   Deep amber, somewhat like a dirty caramel with reddish hues, thin off-white head, very little lacing.   Meaty nose, malty, definitely some hop notes, slight caramel... smells decent enough.   Also getting a little citrus peel.   Perhaps a smidgen of alcohol is also noticeable.   Pine flavored caramel on the tongue.   Seems well balanced between hop bitterness and malt sweetness.   ABV of 9% is well hidden.   Yep, has a citrus twang to it too.   Certainly feels like a meaty/bigger version of a Red/Amber Ale.   Body and mouthfeel are fairly moderate.   This beer is nothing fancy, well crafted, well balanced, clean on the finish.   I can certainly feel it, albeit I don’t get the alcohol on the tongue.   Fairly good beer.

Sweet aroma with hop and malt added in. Pours a dark red that is cloudy. Very light lacing on edge. It has a sweet malt taste with really nice bittering on the back side. A really nice beer! popery (207), San Francisco, California, USA

The aroma is like a big citric American hop dipped in caramel. There’s a splash of acetone, but it doesn’t overwhelm. The hops dominate the aroma somewhat, but the malt comes out in the flavor. The beer is just the right level of sweet for its sub-style. I’d put this beer just a half step or so behind the wonderful Winter YuleSmith.
