Nik925 (176), USA Nov 20, 2008 Strong flavor onset of hop and malt. Great balance but the bitter takes center stage and is almost out of control. Really bitter for an amber, but still keeps its delicious malt taste-able. One of the better showcases for malt as this one finishes as good as it starts. The flavor profile is similar to other beers in the middle, but when I get that taste, normally it then has a bad aftertaste, no so with this one. One of the best beers in this style easily. SDalkoholic (1055), Chula Vista, California, USA Aug 18, 2005 Updated: Jun 3, 2006This is a re-rate from the bottle. I had this on tap at the Del Mar microbrew festival but after picking up a 6 pack i feel this needs a re-rating. Very hoppy aroma with a floral greeting to the nose. Brilliant red and orange color with small patch of foam. Strong in its flavor of mostly hops and caramel malt structure this amber ales out does anything i’ve had from the bottle. PieTaster (32), Humpton, California, USA Dec 15, 2003 On cask, it's insane. Reminds of a cask ale from the north of England. Cask version is very balanced, draft co2 versions tends to be on the hoppy side.
Last batch I had in San Clemente was not the same. Can taste very similar to Rogue Dead Guy ale. jeffc666 (1821), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Jul 23, 2003 A very nice hoppy ale. Reddish in color as promised by the name. Nice head with good lacing. Tastes of hops with a secondary taste of malt. Good hop complexity, i.e., one hop flavor does not dominate. A very good drinking ale. 21iceman40 (1671), north little rock, Arkansas, USA May 3, 2003 This is a port staple, the only which i have been able to have both at the bar and out of the bottle. A vey robust reddish orange color to it with a minimal amount of head. The hops are killer in this one, subtle malts, with a nice kick of hops. Seems to have an aged quality to it, robust, historic, grand.
