SG (456), San Clemente, California, USA Jun 28, 2005 A brownish/red hue. Similar to a bock in flavor with the malty/caramel sweetness dominating. A very tasty beer considering its right around 8.5%. The alcohol is hidden extremely well. Sweet but not cloyingly so. A very nice offering. Gusler (2656), Tucson, Arizona, USA Dec 9, 2003 Sampled @ Strong Ale Fest San Diego
The beer poured a transparent deep brown color with a modest tan head that was frothy on texture with a relatively decent sheet of lace to conceal the glass. Malt dominated nose, sweet and fresh, hints of caramel, almost fruity in some respects, start was sweet with a nice malt profile, the top a tad thin. Finish had a nice amount of carbonation and the hops forthright in their bite, sweet and dry aftertaste, I must admit to being a bit disappointed in this beer.
21iceman40 (1671), north little rock, Arkansas, USA Dec 6, 2003 My first beer from the san clemente branch of one of my favorite breweries. This one had a big alcohol bite to it and had a sick amount of caramel malt in the body. I also noticed some fruits in it. Impressed indeed. Jokes (1449), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 30, 2003 A nice caramel color with a cool ruby hue. The head was thin, but persistent, and a creamy off-white color. The aroma was an interesting blend of citrusy hops, creamy caramel, a bit of smoke and nutty/grainy malt. The flavor was basically as predicted with a full malt profile and a bit of a hop kick in the finish to make things interesting. With a nice, smooth mouthfeel, this was a tasty, straight forward Scotch ale that accompanied the pizza rather well.
