luckygirl (1212), Longmont, Colorado, USA Jun 1, 2008 Sampled ’08 BSAF. Beer is very dark brown with a huge, frothy/rocky, slowly diminishing, mostly lasting head. Very lacy lacing.
The aroma is malty with moderate notes of roasted grain; Hoppy with a moderate note of resin/pine; Yeasty with a trace of dough; Trace miscellaneous note of coconut.
The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter with a long, lightly/moderately sweet, lightly/moderately acidic. Slightly astringency on the gums.
The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is average.
jsh12bama (212), Alabama, USA Aug 18, 2008 Draft @ Carlsbad. Pours dark brown. Thick tan head with chocolate malt aroma. Thick mouthfeel. Decent but not great. Ungstrup (11136), Frederiksberg, Denmark Aug 12, 2008 GABF 2007. A brown beer with a red shine under a thin orangey head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of vanilla and roasted malt, as well as lighter notes of coffee, leading to a dry bitter finish. Retorp (2158), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 Growler courtesy of Ibrew2or3. Thanks, Dave. I had this at GABF last year too, but was too loopy to rate it.
The aroma is redolent with piney west coast hops and chocolate malt. Toasted/roasted notes are present as well, but the hops and chocolate are the standouts by far. The body is a dark ruby brown to near black and holds a remarkably well formed and lasting mocha head, considering this has been in the growler for over a week. It’s a good looking head, but the body just isn’t stout dark.
Big milk chocolate fore. Followed by massive hops. I am distracted by what I consider excessive hop flavor. This is like Gonzo if they tripled the hops. Still there is a tasty dark chocolate, burnt coffee roastiness beneath that and the mouth feel is very creamy. But, for my personal taste I’d like to have this with about half of the hop pine/bitterness.
Oakes (6853), Miami Beach, Florida, USA May 14, 2008 Dark brown. Aroma is a little smoky with light coffee notes and some creamy chocolateyness. Sweet, almost creamy body with late coffee notes and a hint of nuts.
