COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Julian’s homebrew imperial espresso stout recipe brewed on site with his help as a guest brewer.

Tovarish is a rich imperial stout boasting flavors of dark roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, and coffee. This mighty brew is infused with blackstrap molasses and fresh brewed Peet’s espresso for extra depth and complexity.

Draft. A pitch black beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with strong notes of roasted malt as well as light notes of soy sauce. The flavor sweet malty with strong notes of roasted malt, and medium notes of soy sauce and alcohol, which tickles the tongue and palate and adds to the dry, roasted, and bitter finish.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2009 Growler. Black and opaque with a vague orangey hue and a beige head. Distinct hard roasted malt - very coffeeish. Quite full-bodied, very hard roasted malts, coffee and ashes with an underlying sweetness. Alcohol in the finish with a heavy malt bitterness. A little too burned for my liking. 110709

Draft... RBSG... This beer rocks!... Pitch black with a small, creamy, beige head. Excellent retention. Aromas of rich chocolate and espresso beans. Full-bodied with a satiny mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Loads of burnt, bitter, roasted notes in the flavor. Freshly ground espresso and dark, semi-sweet chocolate. Lengthy, charred, bitter finish. Really nice!

Ok, so I had notes on this from woodshop and it was just confirmed that a bottle was in fact poured. This is nearly black, a nice brownish head. Aroma is roasty and coffee with some nice molasses notes in the nose. Flavor is rich and toasty, great espresso, molasses and chocolate. This is world class stuff!

On tap at the 2008 Strong Ale Festival. Poured a dark black color with a small sized tan head. Aromas of roast, lighter espresso, chocolate, and vanilla, Tastes of chocolate, roast, dark fruits, caramle, and some espresso. The espresso - coffee was there, but for some reason, I wished there was more in there -I am a sucker for coffee in my beers-.

On draught at Pizza Port Solana Beach. Served in a snifter, this Imperial pours black with a medium tan head that diminishes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Nicely roasted aroma of coffee and malt, along with notes of chocolate brownies and hops. RIch, chewy body with tasty espresso and chocolate blend that puts Starbucks to shame. Hops and toffee are present as well. The finish is full and flavorful with a nice mocha flavor and a lingering coffee aftertaste. Simply put, one of the best new Imperial Stouts I have tried in some time.

Bottle shared by Julian at Woodshop 5.0 (2/20/10): Pours an oily opaque with a spotty-lacing beige head. Aroma of sweet rich dark caramel and chocolate malts with some roasty coffee espresso notes. Starts with good fullness and dark caramel maltiness with some roasty coffee flavor before a smooth bittersweet lingering roasty finish with a touch of warmth. A well-balanced, complex and fairly drinkable imperial stout.
