COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Julian’s homebrew imperial espresso stout recipe brewed on site with his help as a guest brewer.

Tovarish is a rich imperial stout boasting flavors of dark roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, and coffee. This mighty brew is infused with blackstrap molasses and fresh brewed Peet’s espresso for extra depth and complexity.

GABF 2008. Oily black pour, thick dark brown head. Heady aroma of French roast coffee beans, charred raisin bread, and a hard-to-pin-down vegetal quality that may simply be part of the whole coffee thing. Chewy, heavy mouthfeel, silky smooth. Explosive rich quality coffee bean flavour backed by shovels of burnt malt, bitter chocolate, and ending with an interesting herbal dry finish. Outstanding.

Ok, so I had notes on this from woodshop and it was just confirmed that a bottle was in fact poured. This is nearly black, a nice brownish head. Aroma is roasty and coffee with some nice molasses notes in the nose. Flavor is rich and toasty, great espresso, molasses and chocolate. This is world class stuff!

GABF ’09.
Pours a deep black with a thin body but leaves an olive green film. Aroma is nice roasted coffee grounds. Flavor is slightly plastic, wtih roasted coffee chocolate bits. Average on the tongue but on the watery side. Nice, but not great.

Bottle shared by Julian at Woodshop 5.0 (2/20/10): Pours an oily opaque with a spotty-lacing beige head. Aroma of sweet rich dark caramel and chocolate malts with some roasty coffee espresso notes. Starts with good fullness and dark caramel maltiness with some roasty coffee flavor before a smooth bittersweet lingering roasty finish with a touch of warmth. A well-balanced, complex and fairly drinkable imperial stout.

Sample at Woodshop, thanks to whomever brought this! My last brew of the night and it was a tasty one. Deep coffee brown with a nice wisly beige head, good lacing. Nose is bursting with a esspresso beans, cocoa dust and some faint dark berry fruits. Medium-heavy on the palate with a ton of coffee on the finish with the booze remaining well hidden.

Wow. (Woodshop 5.0) Wish I woulda known the low number of ratings. I also wish I woulda rated it earlier in the evening, when my notes were more legible and on topic. Great vanilla nose. Taste is beautifully smooth and mellow. Completely NOT overwhelming, and in a VERY good way.

Without seeing the beer’s description there was no doubt this had to be a coffee stout! Oh, and it tastes very good, with a thick palate and gentle undertones of roast and smoke. Excellent beer. Growler shared at RBSG 2009 grand tasting.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2009 Growler. Black and opaque with a vague orangey hue and a beige head. Distinct hard roasted malt - very coffeeish. Quite full-bodied, very hard roasted malts, coffee and ashes with an underlying sweetness. Alcohol in the finish with a heavy malt bitterness. A little too burned for my liking. 110709

On tap. Pours black and opaque with a light brown head. Sweet, burned malts in the nose. Quite full-bodied with lots of sweet hard roasted malt and some coffee. Has a vague underlying fusty edge. Alcoholic finish with some malt bitterness. 7/3/6/3/14=3.3 080709

Growler at the RBSG09 grand tasting thanks to Cquiroga. Black with a tan head. green coffee and light dark chocolate aroma. The flavor is just an assault of sweet coffee. Nice, but a not one-dimensional. Medium-full body with medium carbonation. Nice coffee flavors. I dig it, but coffee is about all you get.
