An ale with extravagant depths, an ale reluctant to give up it’s secrets, an ale of hidden pleasures, this is Inntrigue. Delve into the abyss and you will be rewarded with hints of succulent winter berries and a concealed whisper of dark chocolate and freshly baked bread. This is an ale woven around subtlety, laced with a web of rare flavours: an ale of mysterious shadows waiting to be explored.

Cask; ruby brown, moderate white head; aroma of caramel, lightly toasted malts; taste is also malty, slightly sweet, light toast; smooth mouthfeel; dark berries and a little twiggy; reminded me initially of ryvita cracker bread; chocolate notes came to the fore later in the drink and in the moderate bitter finish; likeable.

Cask at the Cleveland Arms - Bayswater, London. Pours clear, rich gold with a creamy, white head. Pleasant brown bread aroma with touches of toasted leaves. Light to medium sweet flavor with good, bouncy bready malts, light toast, brown sugar, faint berries, low bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation; great condition. Balanced finish with more citrusy now but underscored by fundamental, brown bread malts. A very drinkable bitter.

Cask, The King’s Head, Leicester. Dark copper with an off white foam. Aromas are nutty black tea with lightly roasted malts. Hints of blackberry with herbal notes and spices. Flavours are toasted and roasted malts with nutty black tea and a dry palate. Some lemon and hedgerow berries with a dry finish. Not bad.

Cask in the King’s Head W2. Ruddy brown bitter, thin head. Fruity and malty, quite a bit of caramel and some red/purple fruit. Quite sweet, not so bitter. Not my preferred style of bitter but pretty decent I thought.

My Bottom Line:
Earthy hops, jam-like fruitiness and biscuit-y molasses move into leafy bitterness in this otherwise classic Bitter.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the clear dark copper.
-The flavour profile is balanced.
-Interest is sadly lost halfway through the pint.
-The finishing hop bitterness is rather quiet.
-Malts flavours are tight.

On cask at The Old Green Tree, Bath.

Cask at the Magpie, Brentford. Deep red-brown with a lacy fine white head, dusty malt on he nose, malty and slightly nutty body, dry-sweet bitter finish, a straightforward ale - and very good.
