33cl bottle, FR-Denn’s Biomarkt - bb 10/2014. Pours an appealing translucent deep red-chestnut brown with crisp beige head, accompanied by an inviting malt-aromatic nose of red berries and roast. Taste is varieties of simple natural roast like toasted Landbrot crust, roasted hazelnuts, older cocoa powder. Medium dry palate with a dusty feel to it, enlivened by spicy hops, yet not quite up to the Altbayrisch Dunkel standard that adds coffee and dark chocolate on top. Even if this beer is not (?longer) brewed in the abbey, it remains true to the Benedictine speciality of Dunkel (over Dinkel). Solid example of the style, with an almost franconian bread crust/hop psice balance, maybe missing that tad extra.

(bottle) pours a hazy deep ruby-amber colour with a frothy beige head. aroma of marzipan, kiwi and dark fruit, quite dusty, with some grainy pale malts and chestnut honey. flavour is mostly grainy pale malts and hazelnuts, very husky, with a hint of earth and caramel in the finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle 0,33L. Slightly hazy, amber red colour with soft visible carbonation and small, creamy, light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, milk chocolate, light cappucino, brown sugar and cacao. Taste is a bit acidic at the start, than turns into moderate bitter with cacao note. Watery mouthfeel and light to medium body, but ok dunkel.

0.33 bottle. Dark brown color with a reddish tinge, clear, no head at all. Very strong roasted malts aroma, coffee and some chocolate too. Decisive taste of roasted malts coupled with some coffee and butterscotch. Light body, thin texture and fizzy carbonation which hinders the tasting. Finish is medium long at most, again very malty with a touch of smoke. Overall an average beer, starts off nicely and then gradually lets down.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2013 Bottle from Sokos, Helsinki, Finland!
Pours dark copper colored with high, off-white creamy head. Smell has lots of roasted malts and nuts, some chocolate in the background. Starts with delicious roasted malts, paired with chocolate, nuts and some toffee. Middle part has roasted malts, chocolate and toffee. Goes into a sweet malty and caramelly finish with some coffee. Really delicious!
