UPDATED: MAR 23, 2010 Draught at Olutravintola Pikkulintu, Helsinki, Finland. One of the finest Imperial Stouts I’ve ever tasted, with a full body and a ton of hops, roasted malt and smoke in its taste. Hints of bitterness, chocolate and liquourice as well.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2010 Black color, small tan head; roasted malty and herbal hoppy aroma, also slightly fruity in the background; medium to full body, still quite drinkable due to carbonation; flavor is heavily dominated by herbal bitterness mixing with licorice, alcohol and sweet notes. The Jägermeister of beers probably and therefore not quite my favorite.

Draught at Plevna, Tampere, Finland on 9th August 2008. Black as printing ink and sports a handsome pale brown head. One of the finest stouts I have drunk in recent years. Full-bodied, very strong hoppiness for a stout as well as delectable roasted malt and smokiness. Very bitter chocolate notes too. Totally exquisite and recommended.

Pitch black color, off white head. Sweet honey, blood oranges, dark chocolate, liquorice all make an appearance, in this somewhat unusual brew. Sweet malty backbone and a long bitter finish.

SaintMatty (5487) - Uppsala, SWEDEN - FEB 28, 2009
Draught (St Urho’s, Helsinki) - Very dark brown, almost black with a tan head. Slightly perfumed and hoppy aroma with soap, hops, chocolate and coffee. Hoppy and roasted taste which is slightly soapy. Not bad but perhaps a bit too hoppy for this style. Having said that, most ’imperial stouts’ seem to be like this these days.

Anker (723) - Hillerød, DENMARK - FEB 23, 2009
On tap at Olutravintola Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Pours pitch black, with a creamy, small, long lasting and light brown head. Aroma is hops, chocolate, coffee and sweet roasted malt. Flavor is bitter at first, then it gets pleasantly sweet, with a taste of sweet malt, caramel and chocolate, ending up in a nice bitter and roasted malty aftertaste. Why do I have to go to Finland, to by this one??
