Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

Pours a deep black with a tan head. Smell is almost entirely dominated by roasted malts with tiny hop notes sneaking in here and there. Definitely more toward a schwarzbier in the nose and taste profiles. Taste is similar with roasted malt being about the only flavor. Mouthfeel is quite thin; body is almost entirely lacking. Drinkability is average. Nothing to make me want the next sip. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 09-18-2010

12oz twist-off bottle. Very dark brown color, tan head. Aroma of burnt toast. Flavor has a bit of charcoal, some sweetness, balanced with a bit of hop bitterness. Thin bodied. Simple and black.

12 oz bottle from Monaghan’s. Pours a pitch black body that despite the darkness seems thin and watery with an average sized foamy beige head. Aroma has some decent complexity with notes of cola, light soy, buttered nutts on a shet of aluminum foil and some squashed dark fruit guts. Medium to thinner bodied with average strong to just straight up strong carbonatoin and a quick fading aftertaste of burnt malts. Flavor of slightly burnt toast topped with old tobacco and stale nutts. Yup that about sums this one up.

Bottle. Pours an opaque black. Thin tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is toffee, roasted malt and coffee. Flavor is lots of burnt coffee with some subtle dark chocolate notes. Thin mouthfeel and slightly astringent finish. The dark roast and bitterness is too much for the body.

12oz bottle pours dark brown/black with large tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, raisins, toffee, and chocolate. Taste begins with a bitter roast malt/soy sauce flavor that rides to then end and overpowers flavors similar to aroma.

Not bad. Has a nice fruity malty aroma. Looks good with a dark brown pour and tan head. The flavor is fruity with some caramel and maybe prunes? Not in a bad way though. Nice finish. A tad light maybe but pretty good.

[Tap] Sampled at a festival. Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts and a little bit of coffee. The taste is mainly mocha, cocoa, roasted hazelnut, some charred wood and light vanilla. Average to slightly below average mouthfeel. Prickly carbonation and lingering coffee finish. One of their better beers for sure.

UPDATED: DEC 18, 2010 Bottle. A- Dark mahogany with a good sized, very creamy, frothy, dense, smooth, light khaki colored head. Good retention with a nice, creamy layer of lace left over. S - Toasted malt with touches of caramel. A good amount of chocolate and some coffee. Some roasted grain aroma as well. Reminds me a lot of a Schwarzbier in the aroma, but a bit more grainy, and less roasted aroma. T - Similar to the nose with a good amount of toasted grain, and some roasted caramel malt. Some milk chocolate and toasted dark bread with just a faint hint of coffee. Some earthy/nutty and herbal hops come out mid sip and last a little toward the finish. M - Light to medium body with a good level of carbonation. Pretty crisp and drying feel. D - Pretty easy to drink beer with a good balance of flavors. Nice beer that is refreshing, but it does lack a wow factor. Notes: Reminds me of a Schwarzbier more than a Brown Ale. Good amount of chocolate and some roasted flavors, along with a fair amount of earthy/nutty hops. Didn’t wow me, but it was pretty refreshing and an easy, fairly enjoyable beer.
