COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

355ml bottle. Pours dark black with thin head. Aroma is pretty much of nothing. Weak malts. Taste is much the same...weak bodied. A shame.

Bottle - Pours black with a thin tan ring of head. Nose is dry and nutty, with some lightly roasted dark malt and a touch of sourness. Taste is nutty, with dark bread and a bit of dark fruit that lingers in the mouth through the long finish. Some molassess and graininess as well. Thinnish with mellow carbonation. Decent.

Bottle. Black with a small head. Slightly malty and creamy. Pleasant but not one that stands out at all.

355ml bottle at home, 5.2% version. Pours very dark brown with reddish tints, tiniest ring of off-white head. Aromas of liquorice and dark sugar, some stone fruit. Taste is sweet, with a short roasted bitterness coming through at the end. Not bad.

From bottle. Pours black with tan head that looks like felt. Nose has licorice and lager yeast. Light body, caramel malt with a bit of roasted malt. Slightly metallic finish. Odd.

Totally solid black body with a medium purplish-tan head. Smells of licorice and coffee. Taste is deep, mildly sweet with licorice, yeast & hops, mild coffee. Finishes clean, slightly astringent.

100th American beer. Quite light nice enough balance with a hint of vanilla and a dry finish, but none of the flavours are that powerful leaving it a bit bland overall. Disappointing.

Bottle from Rhythm and Booze, Ripon. Very dark mahogany with no head - almost black. Not much aroma. Slight vegetable smell perhaps. Little in the way of flavours. A bit of vegetable, a touch of coffee and caramel. Reminded me of coke without the sugar. Not great.

kinda sour, kinda malty, kinda undrinkable. It is in line with the rest of this brewer, who misses the mark on all their products.

$1.79 for the 12 oz. bottle purchased on Thursday evening at Top Shelf Brews. To pint, it pours a purplish dark brown, with a sudsy vanilla cream head 1 finger in length. Aromas straightaway of black licorice, milk chocolate, raspberry jam, and American yeast, followed by charcoal, bay leaves, and grass trimmings. Tastes the same with the addition of roasted wheat, molasses, and noble hops by swallow. I like.
