COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of burnt carmel, earthiness and tobacco. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of tobacco, burnt carmel and a hint of dark fruit with a smooth lingering burnt carmel finish.

12oz bottle poured a dark brown almost black hue w/ a med dark tan head fully dissipating and minimal lacing. Medium pleasant beer aromas of hop roasted malt and grain. Taste is light sweet with flavors of caramel and dark chocolate ends with a faint bitter that can almost be attributed to the roast flavor as much as the hops. Medium body, almost has a creaminess to it.

Pours a dark black color with a decent dark tan head. Aroma is pleasant beginning with a faint hop note followed by roasty malt and grain. Taste is good. Notes of caramel and dark chocolate pairs nicely with a slight fruit sweetness finished with a malt that rounds it out very nicely. Pretty good beer.

A malt and roast aroma, dark brown, almost black. Tastes not quite as intense as many schwarzbiers. Still, it’s pretty decent. Not aggressive but drinkable.

This beer is a dark brown color with a medium creamy tan head that recedes steadily to a film. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malt and hops. Light-bodied with a roasty malt character and notes of grassy hops and a bit of fruit. The finish is slightly smoky with a short malt aftertaste. Pretty average overall.

Typical Point ale. Not very complex, but good for the non micro brew drinker for exposure into a dark style ale.

Pours near black with a nice tan head. Faint roasted aroma. Taste is a little roasty maybe some hints of chocolate. Not a lot going on here.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of foamy finely sized tan colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a no visible carbonation and a semi-opaque black colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The mild aroma was of black malt. The flat mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish. The thick flavor contained notes of dark and roasted malts. A decent one but not one that I would consider buying again.
