Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

kinda sour, kinda malty, kinda undrinkable. It is in line with the rest of this brewer, who misses the mark on all their products.

$1.79 for the 12 oz. bottle purchased on Thursday evening at Top Shelf Brews. To pint, it pours a purplish dark brown, with a sudsy vanilla cream head 1 finger in length. Aromas straightaway of black licorice, milk chocolate, raspberry jam, and American yeast, followed by charcoal, bay leaves, and grass trimmings. Tastes the same with the addition of roasted wheat, molasses, and noble hops by swallow. I like.

Opaque dark brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Palate is minerally crisp. Super light dark malt with a little lactose. Touch of molasses. Dry finish. Not bad.

Nose, is toast, slight biscuit, cherry, slight lactose; all underpowered. Taste coffee, licorice, cherry and fruits some pepper and spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is quite full but over carbonate. It’s OK.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body with a one finger fizzy light brown head that faded to a thin film. The nose is licorice laced with some slight sweetness and a mild hoppiness. A little bit of fruitiness here that doesn’t quite fit with the Schwarzbier style, but I guess that’s intentional? The flavor is pretty decent up front, some licorice and light roast with minimal biterness. It finishes a bit thin and weak though. Light bodied, but a touch clingy with fizzy carbonation. Not sure what to think of this one, doesn’t really fit into any particular style, that’s for sure. A little more hops in here to balance the sweetness and it would be greatly improved.

Ebony, fizzy pour with a thin off-white head. Subdued aromas of licorice, toffee, citrus, brown sugar, roasted malt. Slightly dry on the palate with malty sweetness, finishing bitter. Decent

Deep dark color with a tannish color head. Lots of fruity tartness, cherry and plum, in conjunction with the malt. Lots of fruitiness, not much roastiness.

Bottle, from Rhythm & Booze, Barton upon Humber. Jet black, thin shortlived off white head and gentle condition. Delicate sweet molasses, burnt toffee and liquorice in the nose, slightly worty in the mouth but redeemed by a gentle roasted bitterness, a slight creamy lactose note and some mineral chalkiness. Finish is a little roasted and bitter with a lingering toffee note

Bottle. Black body. Medium off white head. Nose is citrus hops, black malt, iron, fruit, spice, unwelcome rubber/sulphur notes. Bitter, with some sweetness, possibly due to the addition of sugar. Dry finish. A bit watery on the palate.

Single bottle from HyVee. Pours, well, like a bottled stout. Black beer under a big tan to brown head. I can’t give too much props to the smell, because it is very, very light; just nothing wrong. Taste is a solid, though admittedly unremarkable schwarzbier. The expected dry lager finish kind of prevents the black malt character from asserting itself. Some ups for having a definite malty feel that leaves my lips a little sticky. And I am getting fonder of this brewski as I go further into it.
