Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

Bottle, from Rhythm & Booze, Barton upon Humber. Jet black, thin shortlived off white head and gentle condition. Delicate sweet molasses, burnt toffee and liquorice in the nose, slightly worty in the mouth but redeemed by a gentle roasted bitterness, a slight creamy lactose note and some mineral chalkiness. Finish is a little roasted and bitter with a lingering toffee note

Bottle. Black body. Medium off white head. Nose is citrus hops, black malt, iron, fruit, spice, unwelcome rubber/sulphur notes. Bitter, with some sweetness, possibly due to the addition of sugar. Dry finish. A bit watery on the palate.

Single bottle from HyVee. Pours, well, like a bottled stout. Black beer under a big tan to brown head. I can’t give too much props to the smell, because it is very, very light; just nothing wrong. Taste is a solid, though admittedly unremarkable schwarzbier. The expected dry lager finish kind of prevents the black malt character from asserting itself. Some ups for having a definite malty feel that leaves my lips a little sticky. And I am getting fonder of this brewski as I go further into it.

Black, big cream coloured head, doesn’t last. Smoky roast malt, muted nose. Terrible flavour, watery, burnt malt mess. Thin, weak carbonation. Sugary sweet finish. Awful.

Bariaboo. American ipa. Black ipa. Very nice. Entered this beer on a different app and I'm not able to import my comments unfortunately.

No Coffee, No Chocolate, No Funky groove, just smoke. Tons of smoky smoke flavored smoke. I love Black brews, porters and the like but this smokiness was overwhelming.

This is quite a fun beer, the aroma has a mix of chocolate and a hint of coffee backed with an unexpected note of dark fruit. The flaour returns to more schwarzbier territory with the coffee notes stepping forwards.

Definitely more schwarz than brown. A little hop bite to keep things interesting.

12oz non-returnable bottle from variety pack - pours dark brown if not black with beige head. Nose is chocolate and lactose. Flavor adds caramel and toast with a tiny hop kick at the end. Refreshing and light to medium body. Drinkable and very middle of the road. Sad to say this is the best rated beer from the variety pack. Maybe the 2012 destruction will come a little late and take me away before I try the APA. Tic toc.
