Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

Aromas of cocoa, char, toast, and slight coffee. Almost black with some bronze highlights, and with a moderately lasting, tan head. Off-dry with some molasses and meaty flavors, and some harsh, oily off-flavors. Light-medium bodied with pretty refreshing carbonation, and finishes pretty clean leaving behind some syrupy caramel and molasses flavors.

Really toasty malty aroma little cocoa and slight raw coffee scent. Light brownish head and dark black body. Sweet malty flavors slight petrole, some toast and grape and underlining metallic tastes. Not much to the palate

12 oz. bottle. Pours a medium, poorly retained mocha head, over a dark brown (SRM 30) body.....nose is cereal with roasted malts (light cocoa, coffee)....taste is cereal malts, light cocoa, light coffee, finishing with a moderate, roasted malt hop bitterness.....mouth feel light, minimal astringency, carbonation adds a clean lightly acidic finish. This meets the Schwartzbier style reasonably well although head retention was lacking. The Ale yeast used did not add much in the way of esters. BJCP 8/2/13/4/7

Slabe piwo jesli mam oceniac w kategorii brown ale. Mala piana rozwodnienie spore i karmelowe przeslodzenie. Troche bylo uciazliwe. Aromaty zadne nie byly wyczuwalne w moich nozdrzach.

Bottle from the Sampler 12 pack. Not sure how this is classified as a brown ale...

Point (UK) Black Ale from Sourced. Black body with medium tan head. Nose is sweet, malty, dark fruits. Quite schwarz-like. Taste is hoppy up front with sweet, caramel and dark fruits coming in through the middle. Syrupy, smooth texture. Enjoyable.

Not a brown ale. This is a schwarzbier if ever I saw one. Malty lager. Weird. Ok.

12 oz bottle from the six type sampler case. Just alright, certainly not in the top of its class. You get what you pay for and this case came pretty cheaply.
