COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

Not a brown ale. This is a schwarzbier if ever I saw one. Malty lager. Weird. Ok.

12 oz bottle from the six type sampler case. Just alright, certainly not in the top of its class. You get what you pay for and this case came pretty cheaply.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. The look is black in color and the beer does not have much head. The smell is mush, malts, roast, and blah. The taste is slightly fruity, malts, and decent.

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. A black beer with ruby red highlights. It has chocolate and cola flavours with sweet red fruit and a nutty roasted finish.

Bottle at Sourced Market, St Pancras. Black beer with a lasting dark beige head. some choc some dark malts, but pretty basic. Not much hop. Just a dark beer which is ok, but not a lot of character. Fine, just not very exciting.

Pours a very dark brown with attractive beige head. The aroma is caramel with some nut, ash, cocoa, and rotting fruit. The flavor is a mellow ashiness with some odd herbal notes and a little bit of pine. Drinkable,

Dark brown/black ale with little or no head poured from bottle. Roast malt with hints of caramel. Medium body, flavour of bitter dark chocolate and roast malt. Rated higher because goes down very smoothly.

12 oz bottle. Pours a very dark brown with attractive beige head. The aroma is caramel with some nut, ash, cocoa, and rotting fruit. The flavor is a mellow ashiness with some odd herbal notes and a little bit of pine. Drinkable, but just a tad strange.
