Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

Nose, is toast, slight biscuit, cherry, slight lactose; all underpowered. Taste coffee, licorice, cherry and fruits some pepper and spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is quite full but over carbonate. It’s OK.

Bottle: (as Onyx Black Ale) Pours slight rubied, clear black with a heavy, tan head. Caramel malt...roast chocolate malt aroma. Taste is creamy, light chocolate roast.... A little herbal hoppiness. Not bad.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Black body with a thick beige head. Nice lacing. Aroma of burnt toast, filter coffee, nuts and even a hint of red wine. Flavour of brown bread, weak coffee and plum. Thin body with a slightly oily texture. Light carbonation. Simple, nice.

Not too good, kind of tastes like burnt baked beans, more like a lager than an ale.

@ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear, very dark brown with a long-lasting tan head, streaks of lace. Taste is light malt that grows into caramel as it moves through the palate, turning politely bitter in the finish. An agreeable quaff, but nothing exceptional, or even memorable.

Rated on 4-14-2011 (Bottle) This beer pours a small smooth semi-fizzy tan head that mostly diminishes, opaque dark brown body, fast rising carbonation observed, and spotty amounts of lacing. The aroma is malt, chocolate, roasted, and light hops. The taste is malt, some chocolate, roasted, and burnt. The mouthfeel is soft and this beer is light-medium bodied. Overall, this beer is just ok as it does not afford much character and the flavor could be enhanced.

Bottle. Pours near black with a tan head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has notes of dark bread with some chocolate and a bit of roasted malts backing. Flavor is mainly dark grains and dark bread with a hint of roasted malts and chocolate. A bit thin on the finish.

Roasty and toasty, but its not the mosty. Thin and average. Won't seek it out, but I'd take it in a desperate situation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
