COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

Bottle at Jack & Leighton’s birthday celebration, thanks to Colin. It pours deep mahogany brown with a small beige head. The nose is earth, roasted malt, caramel, cola and light sulphur. The taste is light roast, cola, caramel, treacle, wood and earth with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not much to it really. So-so.

Bottled. Poured deeper brown with a nice and rich cap of dark tan head.. set up nicely in the glass. The aroma was sweet, sweet, sweet (and lightly roasty) with molasses and honey driving it.. lesser nutty notes and coffee.. fresh overall complexion, but I couldn’t pinpoint any particular hops. The flavor found similar.. sweet, lightly-roasty molasses and tar at the core with coffee and earthy bitterness around.. light smoke and sweet vanilla as well.. finished with toasted molasses, smoky char, and earthy bitterness. Light-medium bodied and sweet on the palate.. the smoke and fresh bitterness worked well here.. tacky at times during the drink. This was interesting, and I’ll drink another.

Bottle: Pours a mostly opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a thin ring of wispy light tan head. Has a sweet toasty nutty dark caramel nose with some dark chocolate notes and a hint of sweet corn Starts with decent fullness and fine carbonation with a smooth toasty dark malty sweetness with some earthy dark chocolate bitterness and a touch of coffee before a drier, bittersweet finish. A pretty unique take on schwarzbier/brown ale that has good drinkability, but could use a little more body/sweetness.

Bottle. Pours near black with a tan head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has notes of dark bread with some chocolate and a bit of roasted malts backing. Flavor is mainly dark grains and dark bread with a hint of roasted malts and chocolate. A bit thin on the finish.

Very dark brown to black pour with a slight soapy brown head. Mild nose of roasted malts and slight dark fruit. Palate is quite light. Taste is mild roast, toast, and just a hint of sweetness. Not bad.

12oz bottle. Black but still clear body. Minimal white head. Nice chocolate and toasty flavor. Medium body, little nice chewiness. Good bitter flavor, light sweet. Nice light chocolate aftertaste, light herbal hops. Solid black ale, though a little plain and mild.

6/13/11. 12oz bottle. Dark brown pour with a small tan head that fades to a ring fast. Subtle fruity roasted aroma that is sweet and generic. Overly sweet and slightly vegetal flavor that fails to deliver. Blech.
