COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the mystery of the ancient Mayan “Long Count” round calendar, Stevens Point Brewery’s brewmasters have created 2012 Black Ale, a dark, robust brew to satisfy beer lovers’ tastes any day of the year. In addition to the Mayan calendar mystery, 2012 Black Ale is inspired by traditional German “schwarzbier,” or black beer. German-style schwarzbiers typically are lagers, but we saw this beer is an opportunity to be more creative. We brewed our interpretation of black beer as an ale, which means more hops as well as fruity notes that come from using an ale yeast. The use of roasted malts adds a slightly burnt character to the beer.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. The beer pours a dark brown color with red highlights and a tan head. The aroma is toffee with some chocolate and earthy hops notes. The flavor is toffee and earthy hops with not too much else going on. Thin to medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not a very exciting beer, but nothing too offensive either.

(12oz bottle thanks to bu11zeye) clear dark brown, lasting tan bubbles. Nose of chocolate malt, syrup, and toasty caramel. Taste of chocolate malt, cracker, dry grain, and cream with a watery finish and linger of chocolate.

Dark brown body, thin light brown head, nose of darkly toasted white bread with a splash of runny chocolate, taste much the same, a tad dirty... as unrememberable as this review.

12 oz. bottle shared by shigadeyo. Pours dark brown in color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma was roasted malts with a mild hop presence. The flavor was roasted malts, earthy hops with the burnt character being a bit out of place. All in all, this was pretty much what I expected it would be.

Received 12-oz bottle via trade with with Ughsmash. Pours a dark cola brown colored brew with a decent sized tannish beige head that slowly dissipates to a film top. Nice lacing throughout. Aroma of chocolate malt, floral hops, a hint of allspice, cream tartar, and some light yeast. Taste is medium bodied, some burnt chocolate malt, floral hops, roasted nuts and toffee. Finish is semi-dry with some burnt dark malt and chocolate aftertaste. The burnt malt lingers a little but it’s still quite tasty.

Black, dense beige head. Grassy, coffee-ish aroma. Clean and crisp, wih more grassy and coffee notes in the flavor. Simple, but not bad at all.

A silky tan head that looks like it came from a nitro tap tops a perfectly black body. The nose has some rich caramel and toffee. There is also a little bit of cocoa and some black bread. The taste is largely day old coffee, especially in the finish. There is some light dark chocolate once you get past the burnt coffee. There is also some soybean hiding. This is overall decent, but a little too much roast for the body, I think.
