St. Benedict of Nursia lived in the late 5th to early 6th centuries. Legend has it while living in solitude, he was befriended by a raven that later saved his life. He is most remembered for writing the Rule of St. Benedict that, among other virtues, teaches humility. Inspired by this Rule we humbly offer St. Benedictís Winter Ale, a hand-crafted ale using generous amounts of dark roasted malts and the finest noble hops for a robust warming flavor.

On tap at Hudsonís in Plover, WI. Pours a clear, deep amber with long-lasting meringue head. Good lacing. Aroma is moderately nutty & spicy. First taste is nutty maltiness with a dash of vanilla. Some fruitiness follows with a surprising spiciness in the finish. Medium mouthfeel but excellent carbonation from a tapper. Never got to try it from a bottle but would definitely ask for it again on tap. Very good.

Draught @ Draught 55. Another inky black beer with creamy chocolate colored head, they seem to be proliferating. This one has a doughy aroma, low carbonation, sweetish taste with roasted malt at the background. It actually disappointed me a bit, I expected a stronger taste with possibly mocha flavors, but no. Well there is still some lingering chocolatey taste after a longish finish. Good but not great.

Pours black with a foamy, tan head. Nose is roasted malts with coffee and vanilla notes. Taste is balanced. Lightly bitter. Medium body, lively carbonation. Decent brew.

On draft, pours clear amber body with thin off-white head. Smells of dark fruit, caramel, and earthy yeast. Heavily roasted malt yields huge coffee flavors. Coffee dominates any complexity of taste. Average winter warmer, but too one-noted.

Bottled (twist off, amazingly). Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is malty, roasted, some cinnamon and Xmas spices but not overpowering. Flavor is roasted, sweet, some gingerbread spices, cinnamon, really a nice pleasant Xmas beer.

Rated on 01-23-2013 (Bottle) This beer forms a medium sized semi-fizzy beige head with a short retention, copper transparent body and no lacing. The aroma is caramel malt, hint of banana and spicy. The flavor is caramel malt, sweet, spicy, and light hops. The mouthfeel is smooth and this beer is light-medium bodied. This is a quaffable session beer that I would drink again,

Pours a deep brown with tan head. Spice, dark fruits, and some roasted malt on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with more spice.

Big and black beauty with nice head, shouldah been a 5. Like a black ipa on the palate. Perhaps a bit difficult to the unexpected. Yes, wew, dark beer fer sure. When i saw winter I thunk spicey but it is not; more like dark roasted strong beer. Yes, this must be black IPA, not strong ale, but Iím not doubting its strong, heheh. Thick medicinal finish. Not typical of the friendly point brand beers Iíve had in the past. Yes, either black ipa or baltic porter.
