It just wasn’t enough to use a blend of 5 varieties of hops in our India Pale Ale. We needed more. We needed to go wholehog! So, we added a sixth hop and created a more pronounced hop nose and a massive hop flavor for our American twist to this legendary style.

I have to say that this is the type of beer that seems to suffer by association. The brewery on the whole is below average, but this beer is pretty good. Lots of hops but a nice malt sweetness in the finish, that leads it to be above-average in sweetness but stil quite enjoyable.

Not a bad IPA. Malty on the nose. Nothing really special. Not very bitter sweetness balances it all out. No head. And truly this is a double IPA. I’ve had better.

It poured an amber color with an off-white head. The aroma was of floral hops with toffee crystal malts. The taste was boozy and had floral hops and herbal notes. Decent.

A - An amber orange that casts red light from the glass. A two finger off-white head that settles into a nice base of bubbles. Minimal lacing. S - Sweet bread, buttery toffee malt. Very inviting aroma. Notes of pine and citrus. T - Malt forward start. Rich malt wrapped with grapefruit and pine bitterness. It has a hefty bit of peppery spice that works with the malt and creates a welcomed dryness. The bitterness balances up on the finish. Overall I love this beer. It’s between an IPA and a DIPA. Great malt flavor going on. I love the gentle hops profile as well. I could drink this all night. Highly recommended. Serving type: bottle 09-01-2010

Bottle: Labelled as 1857 LTD Edition Pours nearly clear amber with a short, light tan head. Sweet, sugary, hop aroma. Taste is malty sweet and bitter hops. Rather mismatched flavour blendings...sweetness and hops at odds with each other. Not too good.

Bottle. Not overly fond of the aroma. Sugar cane and alcohol. Crystal clear dark gold with virtually no visible carbonation nor lace. Very thin white head. Tastes pretty much as it smells. Molassesy hop flavor with a lot of alcohol. The alcohol is what saves this beer. Not sure which hop, or concentration of hop varieties, is holding this beer back. It’s a pretty good brew nonetheless, and I like the new label.

Odd 2x IPA because it seems the initial taste is hoppy, but then falls short of expectations. The palate is very crisp and enjoyable but there is nothing spectacular about the beer overall.

On tap at the brewery. Plenty of hops in the aroma, but not as distinctive in the taste. No bitter punch and a grainy palate. Poured to a deep auburn color and looked quite nice. Considering that Point Brewmaster John Zappa is getting set to retire and will be turning the reigns over to Gabe Hopkins, it should be interesting to see whether average Whole Hog entries like this one get revised in the future.

uh no. Malty, not very hoppy. Slight hop aroma, brown/orange pour. Not only did I not get a hoppy flavor, but not even the imperial taste. Not great. I’ll pass on this one. Just because the style is imperial/double ipa, does not make this a good one. OK at best.

Had this at the 2012 Great American Beer Fest in Denver, Colorado. Nice sweet toffee/roast flavor and scent, finishes with a nice bitter.
