Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, from the botanical name for the hop plant. Confusingly, it also means bumble bee in Flemish. Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden-bronze, ale. It is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts.

Pours slight hazy orange with nice foamy head. Aromas of honey, bread, banana and pepper. Smells quite similar to Tripel Karmeliet. Taste is bready, honey, very light citrus, belgian funk, dryness in the finish. Medium bodied, appropriate for the style. Nicely balanced, very enjoyable.

Bottle. Light orange color, not too much foam, quite bubbly. Aroma is fresh and yeasty, orange, nuts, cheese. Taste is like the aroma: similar to a Saison, but not as outspoken in its individual elements. A blended sweet taste of yeast and light orange, develops towards a robust bitterness, some cheese in the aftertaste. Agreeable, but a little bland (apart from the bitterness).

Draft pour. Quick disappearing white head. Pours a dark orange color with a fruit aroma. Mostly grapefruit with a little funk. Flavor is mostly fruit. Citrus with a little banana in there. Some orange as well. All flavor is dry and empty to me. A little foul honestly. Something missing on this one. Dry finish. Not the worst out there, but probably won’t go back to this one.

Dry spicy hoppy aroma. Cloudy dark golden. White head, lot of lacing. Strong bitterness balances the spiciness of the yeast. Light sweet aftertaste. Crisp.
