COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, from the botanical name for the hop plant. Confusingly, it also means bumble bee in Flemish. Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden-bronze, ale. It is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts.

Bottle says best by June 2014. Pours amber with heavy dark floating sediment. Smell is dark fruit, honey, some oxidation. Taste is oxidized a bit with some lite cardboard, spicy yeast, floral and fruity, lite pepper. A bit old and mistreated.

Jaune brumeux avec un petit col blanc. L’arôme du malt, levure belge et un peu d’houblon. Le goût est d’abord un peu du malt légèrement sucré et du levure belge puis une finition assez amer (pour une belge) d’houblon floral.

Draft @ Grill Next Door. Very floral with some light citrus hints. The dry hopping seems to carry over into the flavor as well, with Belgian yeast, cracker malt, and solid amount of floral notes. Nicely dry texture. Classic example of a Belgian ale and highly drinkable.

250ml bottle from Beers of Europe (£1.99):
Another very nice Belgian offering here, this one was quite bitter but as I suspected not quite as bitter as some of the American style beers I’ve reviewed on here. There was a lot of spice and background fruits to this one that balanced the beer out well and the tart flavours started strong but settled down was the beer had time to open up a little. Overall a decent beer and one well worth picking up.

75cl bottle. Slightly hazy golden colour with a real generous fluffy white head. Yeast, citrus, spicy and fruity aroma. Average carbonation and medium body. Taste is well balanced with a bitter dry finish. Overall, a very good beer.

Barreras (1180) - Diamond Bar, California, USA - DEC 11, 2014
Pours a yellow color with a grass and spruce aroma. Taste is a light malt with a plant aftertaste on the palate. No distinct bitterness but an airy malt tinge after the swallow. The alcohol content is recognizable but the beer is still smooth.
