Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, from the botanical name for the hop plant. Confusingly, it also means bumble bee in Flemish. Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden-bronze, ale. It is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts.

Corked 11.2 oz. bottle, shared & poured to snifters showing a hazed, orangey gold color, with a light layer of soft white foam that reduced, but persisted as a thin ring & film, leaving some light spots of lacing on the glass. The nose was light yeast & spice, subtle wheat, with a hint of sweetness to the grain. Light bodied, with decent effervescence, the taste offered a touch of candied sweetness, with moderate, lingering, hop bitterness, just a hint of tartness, and a crisp & dry finish. Subtle, yet refreshing.

Soort, koriander / anise aroma and aroma of whitebeer. High carbonation. Pretty sweet malty barly taste well balanced with subtile hops. Lot of herbs. Very nice sweet anise aftertaste

Bottle @ Les halles, Ieper. Pours hazy amber with airy but rather stable white head. Clear aroma of fruit, flowers and malt, with touches of hops. Sweetish flavour of malt and fruit, complemented by bitter, hoppy notes. Rough, estery finish. Good.

A gift from my dear friend Bartosz. Fine but not very intensive aroma of Belgian yeast spiciness and fruits. Small head disappearing to ring. Murky orange colour. Great hoppy bitterness in taste combined with malty sweetness and yeast. Great herbal bitter aftertaste.

Light Hazy golden coloured with a frothy-mousse like white head, lasting for a good while. On the nose you find some fruity yeasty esters, some hay and barnyard aromas with a clear hop note. Light lively offering at first some sugary sweet bit bready flavour note which fades quickly offering up the scene for more and more zesty fruity/citrussy hop flavours. The finish is developping a sweet dryness lasting a good moment.

75 cl bottle at home, decanted into a jug for sharing. Aroma is bready, yeast with some resinous hop. Colour is orange-golden with a nice tight white head. Taste is initially sweet, soon balanced with a deep, rich bitterness. Full-bodied with a good, but soft carbonation. Finish is long, dry and bitter with a warming depth. One of my favourite beers, and a world classic. A beer you could never tire of. Exceptional.

Ma bière préférée. Subtile en tout point : du gout, de l’amertume bien dosé. Une belle robe et un joli nez. Rien à redire !

Classic Flemish ale since 1981, celebrating the hop culture in and around Poperinge. Yellowish white, irregular, stable, sticky head, colour a misty peach blond. Very aromatic hoppy smell, clear dry-hopping, pepper, orange peel, grapefruit, green apple, cumin, honey; fresh and sharpish ’citrusness’ in the onset, soft sweetish malts, dry-hopping apparent from the middle onwards with a strong, green, perfumey, peppery hop bitterness in the finish, where some fruitiness also lingers as well as warming, gin-like alcohol. Nice and elegant beer, justly a classic.

Bottle. Hazy deep golden color with a minimal frothy off-white head. Aroma of grain and yeast. Sour and bitter taste with a bitter finish. Medium body.
