Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus, from the botanical name for the hop plant. Confusingly, it also means bumble bee in Flemish. Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden-bronze, ale. It is made from a blend of winter, summer and aromatic pale malts.

On tap at Julianís - Providence, RI. I swear to god Iíve had and rated this beer before. Iím really surprised to see that I havenít, because I even remembered what it tasted like from the first time. I was expecting that slightly compromised hop character over a nice malt base. Aroma gives cracker and very honey-like notes. Flavors hold decent malt base, with a unique hop twist thatís somewhere between old and a unique variety of Goldings. Yeast is tight. Decent.

250ml bottle from Beers of Europe (£1.99):
Another very nice Belgian offering here, this one was quite bitter but as I suspected not quite as bitter as some of the American style beers Iíve reviewed on here. There was a lot of spice and background fruits to this one that balanced the beer out well and the tart flavours started strong but settled down was the beer had time to open up a little. Overall a decent beer and one well worth picking up.

Pours a yellow color with a grass and spruce aroma. Taste is a light malt with a plant aftertaste on the palate. No distinct bitterness but an airy malt tinge after the swallow. The alcohol content is recognizable but the beer is still smooth.
