thedm (4783) - Fort Wayne, USA - JUN 25, 2010
This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy fine to medium sized tan colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a softly carbonated very hazy dark orange brown colored body and a good lacing. The mild aroma was hoppy and floral. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a strong hoppy aftertaste. The flavor contained notes of caramel hops and malt. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again.

Lubiere (8335) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 17, 2010
A hazed dark amber ale with a thin off white head. An intense meaty hoppy aroma, with light menthol, exotic fruits, lichee and watermelon, maple notes. In mouth, a smooth sweet malt with scotch whiskey tones, floral pinhey hops, maple, coffee notes, rich and intense. Tasted with Diogene, GRM, Probstk, and Grant, May 19 2010.

Bottle shared by Lubière. Merci! Muddy brown-beige with a thin beige head with poor retention. Aroma is fruit cake, spices, caramel, cookie dough and sweet malt. Flavor is caramel, fruit cake, brown sugar, hops and a bitter aftertaste.

probstblueribbon (2418) - Nepean, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 28, 2010
Bomber shared by Lubiere (merci!), served cold in a goblet. 19MA10.

App.: Very murky deep amber with an off-white rim. Aroma: Rich, oily, thick, sweet, fruity malts, strong, stinky spicy hops. Palate: Medium+body, fairly spare yet prickly effervescence. Flav.: Spicy orange peel, lots of thick crunchy malts, meaty/brothy notes, really heavy and fruity, peppery, some alcohol; quite sweet with good bitterness.

American over-the-top.

Appearance: Pours a fairly transparent orange with honey edges. 1 finger off white head with minimal retention and minimal lacing. Smell: Caramel Malt, Floral Hops, Slight Alcohol tinge. I can tell this one is going in the DIPA direction I don’t prefer. Taste: Same as the nose. Great if you like your DIPA’s to have a strong caramel malt backbone. A bit too malty for my personal preference. Mouthfeel: A bit syrup like and medium to thick bodied. Carbonation is a bit lacking and brew is a touch chewy. Drinkability: A bit too thick and syrupy to get a good drinkabiliity rating. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-28-2008

Thanks Mike! A- Body is a quite foggy, medium, rusty amber hue. Pours with a nice 2 finger foamy white head that eventually subsides to a thin collar. Very little lacing is left behind in the glass. S- Nose is full of piny hops. Behind this is a hint of alcohol and sweet caramel malt. T- Lots of piny and earthy hop flavors upfront with a very faint malt backbone. The pine flavors really come through for the finish as well as a big grapefruit flavor and a hint of caramel sweetness to keep things in check. A whole lot of piny bitterness, resiny bitterness, piny hop flavor, and a hint of alcohol warmth linger on. The overall flavor of this beer reminds me of the picture of the cactus on the bottle. P- Medium carbonation and a body with a lot of smooth hop oils and hints of phenols present. O-This is a nice DIPA and it was a great opportunity to try it. The ABV is somewhat detectable and this is a slow-sipper because of the flavor intensity anyway. Its still a very enjoyable and good DIPA though. Bottle. Being almost 2 years old, this lack alot of the orginal hoppy flavors, but it is still quite good. Pours a nice cloudy orange/amber color with a bubbly white head, that generates a fair amount of lacing. Aroma is still quite hoppy especially compared to the taste. I get quite a big amount of pineapple with some mango, citrus, grapefruit and a solid caramel and biscuity malty backbone. Flavor is quite boozy. It is quite bitter andstill has a slight amount of hops, especially pine and some grapefruit. It is quite malty, with alot of caramel malts. The body is medium with a very soft carbonation. Overall a good DIPA, but would probably have been exceptional if it was fresh!

Bomber from City Beer in SF. I know people are going to shoot me for reviewing a year and a half old double IPA, but looking at the earlier reviews, I don’t think this beer has gone downhill all that much. Seems it started off fairly malty and sweet, and this has worked well as it has transitioned to more of a barleywine-like beer. Pours a brilliant clear amber color. An aggressive pour yields only some bubbles and leaves a small ring around the glass. Aroma is very interesting and barleywine-like. Caramel and brown sugar, with just a little bit of hop character and some light fruitiness. Flavor is very malty and sweet. Caramel and brown sugar jump out, along with toffee notes. The hop bitterness is definitely still there, and hops show up on the flavor as mostly grapefruit, resin, and tropical fruits, pineapple in particular. A little watery on the mouthfeel with somewhat low carbonation. Medium body with some substantial hop oils. Overall really nice though! I’ve been on a barleywine kick recently, and this stacks up pretty well if you categorize it as such.

Bottled. The aroma has grapefruit, some pine, malts. Hazy, orange coloured beer with an off-white head. The taste is bitter, little harsh, has malts, and the fruity/citric hoppyness. Okay, straight forward.
