Amigo Lager is a thirst-quenching Mexican lager traditionally served with a lime. A tribute to the beers of Mexico. Salut!

UPDATED: APR 18, 2007 Draught at Port Brewing on 3/24/07
Thin white head is quickly diminished, leaving only a few patches of lace behind. Rather light, golden-blonde color with some slightly darker maize-like notes and a high clarity.
Not much going on in the nose….Bit of corn-like notes, though not really the offensive type. Light vanillin and dry, grainy malts that are quite bare and not very fresh/crisp smelling. Some nutty, minimally noticeable hops and a finish very devoid of yeast crispness. Mineral water-like notes and grain aromas mostly, and pretty weak at that. Didn’t get any DMS in the nose.
Before even mentioning the flavor, the body and carbonation were way off. Extremely loose carbonation leads to a very thin/watery mouthfeel. And it seems like there just isnt enough malt in the beer either, as much of the flavor is water. After that, some dry, bready, nearly astringent cracker-like notes, slight corn/borderline DMS notes and a bit of waxiness/paperiness. Even the malt flavor that was present was pretty bland, stale and washed out. Not sure what to make of this one. I could understand if it was left on too long at a beer bar, but served right at Port Brewing in this condition? Strange.

Draft at Hamilton’s. I can’t believe Pizza Port put thier name on this. Has to be the worst Mexican style beer I have had.

Not a big fan. Draft at Hamilton’s. Not much aroma. Orignially told the barkeep "no fruit" half way through, I asked for the lime cuz there was now way I was gonna finish the brew without it. Not very good.

Draught @ Port Brewing, San Marcos. Pours a clear golden color with a small white head. Malty grainy aroma. Sweet malty grainy and slightly grassy flavor, with some fruity hints. Malty finish with some bitterness in the aftertaste.

Bottle. A golden color with a diminished white head. The dusty, wet basement, cereal aroma and flavors are always a little more robust and subtle in craft brew bad lagers but evident nonethelss. Smooth and as expected.

On Tap at Port Carlsblad, a good 24 hours recovery from the also-great Solena Beach. Bright yellow Mexico lager. Smells like a taco. Some lace. Bitter and sugary. Sweet aftertaste. You’re in California, you need a Mexican token product in the lineup.

From a 12 oz. twist off stubby bottle with a blurb about Pizza Port on the left side of label, no freshness date. Sampled plain and with a slice of lime as recommended at the website. Poured a clear lager golden with a small foamy white head that settled into a thin bubbly. Aromas of sweet lager malts, a bit crackerish, lager yeasty, and floral hops. With lime, adds a little sour citrus and a some spiciness comes out. Good steady carbonation, not overactive, and a malty crisp, smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel. Tastes of sweet pale lager malts, a grassy graininess, earthy, spicy hops, and a hop bitter, sugary lager malt finish. With lime, adds a sour element to the malts and the hops smooth out, looses a little earthiness. A decent Mexican all-malt lager, not as good as few Mexican Vienna lagers I like, but still, easy smooth drinkability, this would be great on a hot, humid summer day. Easily better than most Mexican macro lagers.

A very fresh, bright clean crisp plain malt aroma. Maybe some edges of sugar. Pour of plain gold, with a slick edge of white. Flavor is again fresh and clean sweet malt, with a lot of white grape vinous character and real deal of fresh grainy character. Not slightly skunky, off or unclean. Finishes with a long clean sugar metamorphosis. Best pale lager, no questions.

On tap@Solana (old notes): Pale golden color with a small white head. Faint aroma of grass and maybe corn. Flavor is sweet and fruity with a light spicy bitterness. Light bodied and thin with moderate carbonation.
