Port Brewing beers are typically boldly-flavored American and hop-forward West Coast style ales or lagers, and Board Meeting Brown Ale is no exception. An amplified brown ale, the beer is brewed with liberal additions of coffee from local San Diego roasters, Ryan Brothers, and cocoa nibs sourced from famed San Francisco chocolate maker TCHO. Alcohol by volume is 8.5%.

“Board Meeting offers the malty richness and assertive hop presence that you expect in an American brown ale, but enhanced with pronounced roasted coffee and bitter chocolate aromas and flavors,” Arthur said. “I think people will enjoy this beer by itself and at the table paired with meat dishes like pork, roasts and barbeque. I imagine it’d be pretty good washing down a sausage omelet at breakfast too.”

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown color with a very large head on it. Nose is roasty with some slight bread elements peaking through. Taste is also fairly roasty and slightly bitter. Almost drinks like a porter. Yummy.

Stable brown-tan head over deep brown beer, nearly black. Chocolate, coffee, coffeedrab and dried herbs. Sweet coffee, with chocolate - cappucino without cream? Hint of charcoal impression, but sugared, as the coffee. Very slick to viscous; medium bodied at best, feels well-carbonated. Brown ale usually isn’t very complex. This is a couple of steps upped.

Deep, rich brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is cocoa and roasted malt. Flavor is big chocolate, dark and rich but without the sweetness of a chocolate stout. Light bitterness and sharp hops keep it from getting heavy. Really well balanced and tasty. Wife: 4.1

Keg at Port/Lost Abbey tasting room, 18/04/14. Light black with a moderate tan covering that dissipates to pencil thin edgeing. Nose is cocoa powde, coffee grinds, sweet notes, light roast, dark fruit. Taste comprises dark malts, coffee more prominent, cocoa nibs, light roast, sweet licks, hint of spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough strong, nicely pitched coffee interaction.

Bottle shared by Mr McGinness. Pours a near-black brown with wispy lasting head, plum hues when backlit. Aroma is roasted malts, brown sugar and mild coffee notes. Flavor is massive - malt, chocolate, coffee beans, and an espresso finish. Creamy viscous mouthfeel.
