Port Brewing beers are typically boldly-flavored American and hop-forward West Coast style ales or lagers, and Board Meeting Brown Ale is no exception. An amplified brown ale, the beer is brewed with liberal additions of coffee from local San Diego roasters, Ryan Brothers, and cocoa nibs sourced from famed San Francisco chocolate maker TCHO. Alcohol by volume is 8.5%.

“Board Meeting offers the malty richness and assertive hop presence that you expect in an American brown ale, but enhanced with pronounced roasted coffee and bitter chocolate aromas and flavors,” Arthur said. “I think people will enjoy this beer by itself and at the table paired with meat dishes like pork, roasts and barbeque. I imagine it’d be pretty good washing down a sausage omelet at breakfast too.”

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau in Redwood City. Amazing aroma jumps out of the glass - complex mix of chocolate, fresh NW hops and biscuit. Deep brown with full brown head. Flavor is rich, full with aggressive hops, coffee, chocolate and solid malt backbone. Great beer!

On tap at Lost Abbey - Pours cola with a ring of brown head. Nose is chocolate, smooth coffee and vanilla. Milky and really pungent. Taste is coffee and milk with vanilla beans and a light sugary finish. Thin and fluffy.

Bottle, Beer Moth, Manchester. As always quality label art from Port. Dark brown pour with a small creamy tan head. Roasted malt, coffee and dark choc notes in the nose. Sweet flavour with similar traits to the nose. Fullish mouthfeel, gentle carbonation. Dry bitter finish. Not my favourite offering from this crew, but its not without some charm.

On tap @ 10 East - Big and tasty. Like an amped up, Imperial Brown ale. Coffee and roated malt aroma. Great coffee and roasted malts on the palate. Medium sweetness kept this in near perfect balance. Top of the Pops.

A draft pour at The :Local Beer Bar in Eureka, CA. Came in my glass very dark brown being almost black with a creamy light tan head and excellent lacing . Nose is chocolate coffee. Smells like a stout. Full body with a rich creamy mouth feel. Flavor is dark chocolate and coffee and there are lots of bittering hops and some citrus underneath. Very full flavored beer.

Very dark brown to black, heady from a room temp bomber chilled a few hours, heavy hiss opened. Almost 2 years old. Aromas of sourish day old coffee or months old for that matter, chocolate and a heavy anise character but I can see that as part of the coca nibs having eaten them before. Coco nibs seem to dominate now that I think about it. There is some complexity and this reminds me of a barley wine as well some. Malty mealy rich roast chocolate anise. I like this a lot better than most strong ales. Its a pretty creamy ale slick and smooth as well. I think I would rather try this when its fresher though.
