Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Dec 31, 2007 Bottle shared by BBB63. Light hazy yellow-orange/straw body, thin-medium off-white head. Medium citrusy, bitter hops aroma, modestly resiny/oily, backed by a bready malt backbone. Body dominated by bitter, citrusy hops. Dry malt. Medium-bodied. Simple and effective. trevor211 (500), Seattle, Washington, USA Dec 31, 2007 Updated: May 5, 200822oz. bottle at Brouwer’s in Seattle. This has got to be one of the greatest fresh hop IPAs ever created. It doesn’t look like much - a light golden color with a medium head - but the first smell will have you raising your brows. It’s floral hops all the way through - it honestly seems as if you’re smelling freshly picked hops, with only a bit of malts showing through near the end. Wonderfully different from the other fresh hop efforts I’ve tasted. The taste, like the aroma, is all hops. Very bitter, but incredibly smooth all the while. Well worth a try if you can get your hands on it - I’m an IPA fan, and this is one of the most distinct brews I’ve tried. OldGrowth (1407), North Carolina, USA Dec 30, 2007 Bottle, from Julio’s. Grreat aroma, sweet & fruity. Grapefruit, orange, peach, apricot, tangerine, grass and a peppery streak. Golden orange color, good head that faded quickly, ok lacing. Bit of sediment on second pour. Bitter sweet flavor, big pucker. Grapefruit and grass combo. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, bitter finish. Mouthfeel got thicker with second pour that had sediment. Very nice aroma, liked the way it changed as it warmed from fleshy fruit to citrus. Beerlando (2284), Orlando, Florida, USA Dec 26, 2007 Another awesome SoCal IPA. This one pours a crystal clear, pure medium golden color with a large, well retained, spongy white head. Intricate columns of ribbony, thick lacing look like some sort of ancient script one would find in a cave. The aroma is very green and very fresh, as the name indicates. Drying pine resin meets strong notes of freshly cut grass and dried herbs. Some dry grains, citrus, and lemongrass are all present as well. The flavor is even drier than the nose indicates. Wheat comes through as a backdrop, with just a touch of buttery toffee for sweetness. Immediately, though, the bitter hops take over and dry things out like an oven. Orange and grapefruit burst through on the palate, accompanying the grassy, resinous flavors. The body is medium in stature and extremely crisp. The moderately long finish is dry and bitter. Overall, a very solid IPA hat goes down easy and leaves you longing for more. SoCal rules this genre. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Dec 26, 2007 Poured a cloudy orange color with huge head good lacing. Aroma was lots and lots of grapefruit and some spices. Flavor was much the same grapefuit won out on the flavors spices totally hidden. Good solid IPA. tytoanderso (1382), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Dec 24, 2007 # 700 22oz bottle from FlacoAlto. Beautiful and bright aroma. Floral and fruity. A good amount of pine. A necessary touch of biscuity malt. Very fresh smelling. Pours clear dark gold with a bright white head leaving decent sticky lacing. Dry and bitter on the palate. The citrus comes shining through. A touch of wood. Cedar. Light pine notes. Fresh. Medium bodied. Crisp and lively on the tongue. Finishes with a lingering citrusy and woody bitterness. Quite nice.
