First brewed in 2002 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the original Pizza Port location in Solana Beach, we searched high and low and combined 15 of our favorite hops which were added every 15 minutes to the boil. Somewhat darker than other Double IPA style beers, our beer oozes the hop goodness of pine needles, freshly squeezed citrus and ground spices which are only moderately tempered by a sweet malt finish. Thankfully, for all of us hopheads, we have decided to brew this beer more than once a year. Look for Hop 15 to make appearances from time to time when space permits us to brew this, one of our favorite ales.
Alcohol content varies. Spring 2012 batch is 11% ABV. Spring 2013 is 10%.

UPDATED: MAR 30, 2014 Pours a hazy, burnt orange color with a rocky three finger off white head. Surprisingly big head for the high alcohol content. Head sticks around and leaves a thick blanket of lacing after it diminishes. Smells of pine, grass, tangerine, lemon, lime, just lots of citric qualities and lots of earthiness on the nose. Very resinous and bitter but get a little carmel malt and some butterscotch in the background in the smell. Taste starts with the citrus fruits like grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, as well as some floral notes. Also get the some carmel or toffee up front. Then in the middle you get more of the sweetness of the carmel malt, as well as the same citrus flavors and floral from before. Pretty juicy, yet subdued in terms of bitterness thus far. Then on the finish the bitterness comes like a rush. You get some citrus fruits with grapefruit being the strongest flavor, accompanied with a much larger dose of grass and resinous pine. Definite alcohol flavor on the finish, along with some sweet malts. I’ve had many other dipas as this level of alcohol that do a much better job hiding it. Very chewy from the hop oils. Very biting and abrasive bitterness that lasts in your mouth. Has a wonderful creamy mouthfeel that works well with the bitterness. As it warms, more of the carmel malt shows through and becomes a little sweeter. Full body with a sticky and oily texture. Not the most balanced double ipa, but Port was not going for that. They wanted to show off the hop, and they definitely succeeded in doing that. A very intense and surprisingly somewhat balanced double ipa.

Aroma and flavor are both very sweet. Hoppy goodness too, but not right for this sweetness level. This is also mixed with some roasted malts, so this is not quite my style.

660ml bottle @ Craft Beer Co. Hazy orange brown, reasonable head. Boiled sweet malt aroma. Resin hop flavour. Bitter sweet aftertaste. A solid DIPA.

Large white head, hoppy-fruity aroma, as it should be, very well ballanced, more bitter at the end, although with some hints of fruits, complex brew, one of my favourites DIPA-IPA style brew.

Transfer from BA review on 11-14-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – The beer is served a hazy golden-orange color with a one finger white head. The head has a good level of retention, fading over time to give a nice level of lacing. Smell – The aroma is heavy of sweet tropical fruit and citrus hop. A nice aroma of mango, pineapple and tangerine are complemented well with a bitter grapefruit and lemon smell. With these aromas, is a lighter floral aroma, which rounds out the fruit smells nicely. Taste – The taste starts out of a bitter grapefruit taste mixed with a bready flavor. While there is a good dose of sweeter fruit in the nose it is not as present in the taste, although there is detectable amount of citrus and tropical fruit flavors on the tongue. Hop flavors continue to strengthen throughout the taste with some pine and earthy flavors mixing with the citrus more toward the middle of the taste. More toward the end, the grapefruit gets stronger and is joined by some floral and boozy flavors to leave a bitter warming feel on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and chewier side with an oily feel. The carbonation of the brew is on the lighter side, which when mixed with the thicker and oilier feel really accentuate the massive hop flavor profile. Overall – A rather tasty brew with a good many hop flavors that come and go in the taste. A nice IPA. While strong in hop it is still fairly balanced by malt and a light sweetness.

Gigantic Double IPA with cloudy orange color and white medium lasting head. Aroma is intense, quite hoppy, full of citrus, pine and resins. High carbonation. Taste is extremely hoppy, citric and piny. Also hints of sweet malts, tropical fruits and resins. Aftertaste is bitter and long lasting. An absolute monster!
