Collaboration Stein beer from Tomme Arthur and Tonya Cornett of Bend Brewing.

It’s not too often the brewing process requires us to make beer in a mind over matter sort of way. Hot Rocks Lager presented us an opportunity to work with Tonya Cornett of Bend Brewing Co. on a collaborative project. Working with our brewers to bring her recipe to fruition, she decided to "Rock It" old school.

You see, not too long ago, brewers produced beers by pulling glowing orange rocks from raging fires. The sizzling rocks were heated until they glowed like hot magma and were then dropped into the wort causing it to boil. Smoke, steam and volcanic rolling boils became the hallmarks of what German brewers call "Stein Beer". Hot Rocks Lager was brewed this way and transported us back in time. The production of this beer made for a memorable experience. As collaborations go, this one ruled. Because as everyone knows, playing with fire is cool.

Bottle at the De Molen Second Tuesday tasting, September 2013. Poured a clear dark chesnut brown with a broken off-white head. The aroma is rich red-berry fruit and nuts. The flavour is medium bitter with a super fruity, creamy palate with some liquorice and caramel sitting there too. The finish is bitter yeast with a hint of sourness. This beer contains so many flavours!

6.5% A stein beer, meaning it was brewed using hot rocks to heat the wort. In this case, black granite. A very dark brown pour with a dark beige head makes this a most unusual looking lager! The aroma is burning rocks, fire & a hint of malts. An interesting taste, malty sweet then burning, fire & a kind of bitter roast finish. Worth trying just to say you’ve had a stein beer. On it’s own merits it is ok though I think the style might better suit a stout...

Pours dark brown, big foamy head. Nose is caramel, pretty weak aroma. Taste is toasty, roasted malts, a little bitter coffee and dark chocolate on the back end. Not sweet. Not bad, not great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Great lager with some unique flavors. Strong for a lager but very balanced. A little hoppy and smooth malt. Good beer.

Roast. nuts, and a little coffee and chocolate in the aroma. More of the same in a relatively mild flavor. Tasty but not overpowering, this is a fine change-of-pace but still a crowd pleaser.

Aroma: Caramel with a barely detectible smokiness. Appearance: reddish brown with an off white head. Flavor: Malt with an unpleasant bitterness. Palate: Medium bodied. Overall: Boring and bland.

Aroma of nice crisp pine hop and burnt toast (in a good way). Pours deep brown with good carbonation but no head. Taste is slightly roasty but still pleasant. Notes of crusty brick oven bread. Easy to knock back.
