Commercial Description:
It’s not often that a great summer swell coincides with a full moon, but when they collide, nature affords us a rare opportunity to paddle out long after everyone has called it a day. These moments are a solitary pursuit with empty lineups, but those who carve graceful lines under a full moon understand how things can be dark lonely and rewarding at the same time. So next time you paddle in from an overcrowded beach break, remember that nothing tastes better than a cold beer after a session. We suggest a glass of this smooth roasty black lager for contemplating empty lineups and waves that go on for days. Most likely, you’ll long for epic summer swells under moon lit sessions opening the doors to isolation and empty secret spots of an age trying to pass us by.

22oz bottle from South Bay Drugs. I was surprised to find this was an extremely deep dark black. Created a small formation of head but it quickly died and became a solid brown color of liquid in a glass. Plenty of roasted malt and olfaction of coffee bean pre-ground. Texture is initially oily but also has somewhat of a creamy palate in the end. Flavor is considerably simple with moderate use of roasted malt and background taste of mocha or hazelnut coffee.

On draft at Lost Abbey, made from the second runnings of the mashed grains from Serpents stout. Appearance is pitch black hue, minimal head and lacing. Smell is moderate coffee/espresso malts, hints of chocolate, roast, subtle grassy hops in the background. Taste is a nice blend of coffee and roast malts with grassy bitter hops, lager yeast and nuts peek through and the roast borders on a smoky sensation, finishes bitter. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, creamy and smooth texture, mild carbonation. Drinkability is moderate, this is a solid lager from LA with a good malt profile, big coffee/roast/smoke works well for this style, the alcohol is well-masked.

RBSG 2008. Pours dark brown with a smooth tan head. Roasty chocolate, like bitter bakers chocolate, that really brings out the bitterness of the beer. Stronger on the hops for a schwartz, good bitter chocolate finish.

22 oz bottle. Aromas of roast, dark bitter chocolate, and a touch of sweetness. Pours almost black with a head that leaves rather quickly. Flavors of roasted malts, bitter chocolate, light molasses. Finishes pretty clean and crisp with a light roast lingering on the palate for a second. Enjoyable stuff.

On tap at Lost Abbey. Poured deep brown with a nice, creamy cap of tan head. The aroma picked up semi-sweet, toasty chocolates and nutty notes accented by light smoke and molasses.. enticing. The flavor was deep and toasty with dried chocolates laced with molasses and a pervasive dry-roasted coffee bitterness.. more dark chocolates toward the end. Dry on the palate with an odd sourness that emerged about halfway through.. overall very tasty and refreshing.

[1360-20080517] 1pt6floz bottle. Old toasted bread aroma with coffee grinds and marinating beef shanks. Dark brown black body with a medium-lasting creamy light tan head. Coffee grinds continues in flavour with dry and roasted nuts. Medium-full body. Quite dry, could stand to be more bitter.
