Oakes (6808), Miami Beach, Florida, USA May 11, 2008 Draught, Lost Abbey, multiple occasions Pretty close to black. Nice creamy head. Lightly roasty, chocolate, with vague hints of smoke and nuts. Full body. Lots of rich chocolate flavours. Sweet and supple. American lager to be sure, but so smooth and complex. 19641948 (476), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Jun 6, 2008 Pours a rich black with a smattering of crimson along the edges. Tan head and lacing. Aromas are huge with roasty malts and chocolate. Grainy flavor with more heavy roast and cocoa. Dark and bitter. Rivals a beefy stout with character, yet is a "mere" 5% schwarzbier. Insane. "Sessions" indeed...I could drink bombers of this all day. A good one! kramer (1856), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 22, 2008 22 oz bottle, via FlacoAlto. Pours a dark brown body, very much like molasses in it’s appearance, with a small brown head that retained as a thin covering. Really great nose of coffee, dry roasted malt, and some hoppiness. Nice clean flavor with a roast and coffee all over the place, some black strap molasses. I love the dark malts with the smoothness and cleanliness of a lager. Moderate bitterness from both the roasted malt and some gentle hopping on the finish. This is really tasty, and a style that I wish more brewers would attempt. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly crisp with perfect soft fizzy carbonation. This is a beer that I would drink a lot of in the summer/fall if I had access to it easily. There is an incredible amount of flavor to this for just a 5% ABV beer. GreatLibations (1246), Sasquatcho, Arizona, USA Apr 3, 2008 Updated: Apr 4, 2008A cold pour lifts it’s head about midway and like a prarie dog goes back down just about
as fast leaving behind a spattered lace. The color is like used oil. Nice aromas of roasted malts
and leather, a bit on the Belgian side. Full nectar, ample carbonation, and a fluffy cotton texture.
A strong roast component comes screaming at me from the depths of the sea pushing waves of
roasted coffee bean and leather forward. In it’s wake follow a bit of steak and herb. The malt
factor is relentless like whale fat flopping on a parched beach. A strong hopsy asprin component
digs in and creates a cool sensation on the palate. The finish is long and bitter roasted.
It’s surprisingly refreshing despite is monsterous nature.
tupalev (2269), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 19, 2008 Bottle at Rudy’s tasting May ’08, courtesy of I think Blankboy. Pitch black, small tan head. Smoke, roast aroma with some hops. Strong roast and smoke taste over a very thick body. Like an Imperial Swarzbier, this might have the most mids leading beer name ever. Very nice and complex.
