awaisanen (1161), Irvine, California, USA Apr 25, 2008 Updated: Apr 29, 2008 From a 22oz Bottle. Pours a dark milky black color, mostly opaque, with and a healthy layer of foamy tan head. Clean malt aromas of chocolate, malted milk balls and gently toasted nuts, along with some hints of roast bitterness. Clean, straightforward malty nose, just as it should be. Medium light bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel with a smooth, creamy texture. Not overly light, but certainly easy drinking. A hefty amount of black patent-like roast is present, bold, but bitterness is restrained. Lots of cocoa and lightly roasted coffee with some nuttiness toward the back end. No yeast characters noticeable, which is good. A mild to moderate herbal hop bitterness comes in on the back end, complimenting the dark malt characters nicely. Not really a schwarzbier in anything besides color or the fact that it’s a lager, but unless that’s what you’re looking for, don’t let that deter you. This is much more flavorful and enjoyable than most schwarzbier’s I’ve had. Certainly a good beer overall, but my only criticism comes in the name. While I was able to enjoy the flavors throughout the entire 22oz bottle, the sheer amount of roast bitterness/astringency made it difficult to plow through the last few ounces, and I expect a "session" lager to be something I could potentially finish a few bottles of.
sirpsycho (190), Murrysville, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 6, 2008 Bottle. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, small tan head. Aroma is malt and chocolate. Flavor is malt, roast, some smoke and chocolate on the dry, slightly bitter finish. CharlesDarwin (1413), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 27, 2008 #1400. 22oz Bottle. Thanks Andy! Smooth caramel, chocolate toast and french sea salt aroma. Solid roast, brown sugar, and hazlenuts. That’s great. Pours a pitch black with a chestnut fringe, and a well-lacing tan head. Flavors are rich, but drinkable. A bit of char comes with deep chocolate roastiness. Chicory and coffee come through. Caramels for background. This is light, though and I like that. Fresh and bristling with salt. A very, very fine Schwarzbier. Cheers to everyone who’s been there for the last 1400 brews, especially Sean and Andy for keeping me in the good stuff. I look forward to the next 1400. beergod! (52), Houston, Texas, USA Sep 22, 2008 This lager pours a very dark almost black color. The nose is of smoked cereal and roasted coffee. Taste is smokey dry malt flavor with a nice drinkability. One of the better lagers i’ve had. Tmoney99 (3648), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Sep 20, 2008 Bottle shared by alexsdad06.
