Thanks to illinismitty for sharing this bottle. A dark brown pour with no head or lace. An aroma of chocolate coffee and yeast. A flavor of raisins or some dried fruit. The abv sneaks in a tad as well. A very bitter finish. Excellent carbonation but a tad thin. Nice all round. thanks sean.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, jerc, mabel, mds and tupalev - my bottle via trade with DarkElf - DarkElf+ Fest í07!!. Poured opaque brown-black, small tan head. Roasty , aroma, oily, slightly tart, thick and sweet, hint of lactose. Taste - very dark, oily, nutty and roasty, alcohol really comes out - nice!. Thick, slick, smooth - astringent and longish almost burnt aftertaste. Excellent - slightly impy, very roasty and somewhat boozy.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: APR 25, 2007 A little too one-dimensional for me...pitch black and soy sauce/motor oil like - flavor was just okay. Didnít feel like there was a whole lot to it other than the nice texture and color. Also had difficulty enjoying my whole glass. Might be just a one-time beer, but definitely not bad

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours dark and thick, not much head at first, but after Iíve stopped pouring the head continues to grow, like a sea monkey. Beutiful deep tan, almost brown color on that head. Smells malty and chocolatey, tastes smooth, too smooth, too cold, should have left it out longer before pouring. Still, chocolate flavors, hints of fruits, especially cherries, without actually tasting fruity. Pleasant hop balance, tastes mild but they probably used a lot of hops to balance all the maltiness. As it warms up Iím getting some citrusy sourness on the finish, espresso, dried cherry. The body is full and round but itís not excessively viscous, despite the name. Overall very satisfying, with some complexity in the sweet - sour -bitter experience, and a long finish.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
After having a bad day yesterday I came home to find that my box from Brian had arrived. So I went through seeing what I had received, and this one was in there. Without thinking twice, or thinking about sharing a bomber of this wonderful beer with people I know at a tasting or whatever, I popped the cap off of it. Pours out a dark brown color with a small like tan head that faintly appears on after the beer has poured. The smell is full of chocolate and some coffee. A touch of grass from the hops is noted as well. Taste is rich and thick, full of chocolate and coffee and hoppy flavors. Damn, a real challange to drink this bomber due to to thickness, but I was certianly up for the challange. Really really good stuff. I wish I could get about a case of this beer. A permanant addition to my want list.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2007 4/10/07: Dark, unlying sweetness, hidden alcohol, strong roasted malts..great with cheese. Tried this beer cold, and then waited 30 minutes warming to room temperature and it became much better. I think sharp beers are much better served on tap or after warming up, letting some of the carbonation burn off. The bite of carbonation and dark roasted grains is just too much, and needs either aging and sitting. My opinion of old viscosity changes from "love it" to eh, to eh, to like it. Wonderful underlying sweetness that is hard to notice at first. Itís also much better half way through the glass as your taste buds get used to it. Drink later in a group of tastings. Iíve tried on tap, in the bottle, but this rating is from a growler I bought at the brewery.8/5/7/4/16:4
10/10/07: 2001 bottle generously shared by defTim13. Bottle #448. Nice pop on bottle open. Mixed bubble head. Jeff Bagbyís dad did the artwork. Flavor rises sharply off the tongue. Pitch black color. Earthy aroma. microbubble head. Pretty nice. Almost a raspberry bitter finish. Nice level of oxidation. A bit of melanoidal malty aroma. 9/4/7/4/16:4 (same)

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a slick, thick, viscous midnight black color; completely opaque. Rich and luscious aromas of alcohol drenched figs, raisins, licorice candies and anise all swimming in molasses. Palate is perfectly round, chewy, oily and subtlely carbonated; extremely velvety smooth and right on for its namesake. Flavor abounds in sweet notes of black licorice, anise, blackstrap molasses, brandy soaked fruit cake, figs, raisins and plums. As the beer warms from its initial serving temp of 50 degrees the alcohol continues to come into the forefront. This is definitely more to the style of an Imperial Stout than a typical Strong Ale, but either way a very enjoyable and extrordinary treat.
