ucusty (1871), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Aug 7, 2007 Bottle courtesy of hellbilly! pours dark black with creamy tan head. lots of lacing! roasted coffee aroma. Chocolate, coffee, malts for flavor slight hoppy finish very good!!! MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 7, 2007 Updated: Nov 29, 2008My Bottom Line:
Eloquent caramel malts display a blueberry port wine musicality through a portly roasty and resinous tuba. Be careful though, cuz this most generous and jazzy Imperial Stout is pregnant with a Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam slowly hides into the dark brown-sleeved blackness.
-The finish is a seamless union of roasted malt bitterness and wooden hop resins.
-Vanilla spiciness accompanies the caramel malts and well-integrated alcohol heat.
-This started out excellent at cellar temperature (10 degrees Celsius), and improved to greater heights upon travelling to room temperature.
-The soft prickliness is a little too much at first, but later on gets quieter, letting the malty glory express itself.
Bottles. All mine. Oh yeah. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA Aug 7, 2007 Dark Brown Color with Sandy Head. Rich Barley and Chocolate Aroma. Rich Syrupy Dark Malts...Subtle Coffee Roasts...Chocolate and Vanilla Flavors..with a Bitter Dry Ending. Smooth and Thickly Sweet To the Degree That Engine Oil Comes to Mind. Wonderful Warming. Nice Offering from Port Brewing. RiverHorse (454), New Jersey, USA Aug 6, 2007 Updated: Aug 23, 2007Pours a deep, dark, opaque black color into the snifter. The head is a light tan color and the lacing really stuck around a while. The scent was a combination of chocolate, roasted nuts, hops, vanilla, coffee beans and malt. So much going on there. The taste was beautiful, both up front with some floral notes and hops coming through and in the back with the toasted coffee beans and chocolate notes having their way. The mouthfeel is perfect, coating the whole palate and warming on the way down. I was very impressed with this beer, a great mix between a strong ale and an imperial stout. fly (1331), austin, Tejas, USA Aug 3, 2007 Oh man..... chocolatey aroma - handed to younger daughter that likes chocolate covered coffee beans only to have her sip and spit - well worth the entertainment. Seems like an excellent candidate for a cellar as it’s deep and rich and high octane super sludge. Seemed a bit easier going when having a sample after many at tasting as opposed to drinking bomber by myself - holy shit this packs a wallop. Each sip brings a hint of a bit more of this or that, be it chocolate, hops, alcohol or whatnot
ummmhummmmmm bhensonb (4187), Woodland, California, USA Aug 1, 2007 Dark, oily, molasses, kind of aroma. Reminiscent of Harviestoun Old Engine Oil. Nearly opaque brown/black color with a tan head that rapidly ringed. Medium to full bodied with creamy carbonation. The flavors are disparate, but the alcohol heat is noticeable. There is dark toasted malt, coffee, cocoa, molasses, really overripe dark fruit, mouth puckering, enough bitter to balance the sweetness, at least mostly balance. There might be some cherry notes. This stuff gets thicker as you drink it. The finish is like oiliness that adheres to the mouth. It really sticks with you at the end - mostly bitter with some molasses. Quite complicated. But burnt organics usually are. Mouthsmackingly good. cbeers21 (563), Miami, Florida, USA Jul 30, 2007 Looks like chunky oil sludge from a 1970’s Dodge....Beautiful. The light tan head is both resiliant and lasting. Coffee, toffee, chocolate notes predominate the aromas as well as subtle hints of vanilla and caramel. The brew itself is chewy and oily on the mouth, and issues wonderful chocolate mocha flavors laced with dry coffee, figs and brown sugar. There is a drying hoppy presence which adds wonderful balance and substantial character to an already complex brew. The alcohol is very well masked and the brew itself is fantastic; good for a cold, foggy afternoon. alexsdad06 (1056), Ohio, USA Jul 30, 2007 Updated: Dec 24, 200822 oz. bottle via Joey @ South Bay. Thanks! Pours very dark brown with a small beige head. The aroma says stout. I get roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate. and a hint of alcohol. The flavor has quite a bit of roasted malt. Accessory flavors include chocolate, bourbon, bitter coffee. The only part I would like to see a little less of is the bourbon/alcohol which stays around into the finish. Not that I don’t enjoy these flavors, I just have a little problem with how they are combining here. This is still a very good brew. Medium bodied. I think I will revisit my other bottle in a year or two (maybe five?).
