Definitely not your Dad’s Wimpy 30 weight. An enormous & luscious dark ale that’s as opaque and dark as the most well used motor oils.

On tap at the brewery in San Marcos. Pours black with a beige head that soon reduces to a ring but leaves a little lacing. Aroma: enticing aroma with a good malt base; hints of white wine. Flavor: rich but not particularly complex dark malts. No burnt elements. Feel: medium-full body; medium carbonation. O: recommended

650mL bottle Bottled 10/23/13’ Pours a deep, near-opaque ruby body. A small whispy tan head hangs around. Nose is rich, complex; burnt caramel, dates, roast nuts, cocoa, charred oak, whiskey undertones, dried fruits, spice. Carbonation is low, substantial weight on the palate without being overly heavy or cloying. Lingers long, warming. Body opens out with rich dark malty goodness; notes of cocoa, nuts, dark crystal malt toffee, with dark fruits, raisins, figs & sticky date pudding. Finishes surprisingly dry, savoury, high bitterness but smooth overall. Really good stuff; not over the top, as many of these American Strong ales can be.

Bomber bottle shared. Pours black with a half finger, beige head that laces. Aroma has big notes of caramel, faint roasted malts, and subtle barrel flavours. Taste is on the sweet side with some nice roasted malts, mild alcohol and barrel notes, and a drawn out, espresso bitterness. Very slight booze as well. Full body with a medium carbonation. Creamy in the mouth with a dry finish. Overall awesome. Perfect for a cool night. Smooth roasted notes with an espresso bitterness at the end.

Barwa: ciemno brązowa, praktycznie nie przejrzysta. Piana jasno brązowa, początkowo grubo, następnie średnio i drobno pęcherzykowa. Dość obfita i ładnie oblepiająca szkło. Całość jest gęsta i oleista. Aromat: melanoidyny, orzech, karmel, ciemne i palone słody, suszone śliwki. Może niewielkie nuty "drewniane". Alkohol dobrze zamaskowany. Smak: pełny, słodowy, ale umiarkowanie słodki.Gorzka czekolada, spieczone ciasto, lekka kwaskowość. Wytrawny, palony i alkoholowy (nieco rozgrzewający) finisz.

Pour from a small growler purchased last night at the Beer Authority, 2013 vintage. If I was smarter about this I’d have picked up a bottle of older viscosity to drink at midnight for my birthday. Oh well, I’ll find something else that’s suitable. Anyway, pours dark, opaque with mocha head; decent retention, spotty lacing. Aroma brings chocolate covered hazelnuts, graham crackers and plums with a little bit of copper before it warms. Milk and cookies. Taste: moderately sweet milk chocolate to start, followed by a rich, roasty bitter finish. Oily, slick texture with medium body and appropriate carbonation. Some alcohol warmth in the end, but overall well-integrated. Overall: quite nice, and this $6 / 32 oz fill was too good a bargain to pass up. Despite being an American strong ale, this is basically an imperial stout in my book.
