Definitely not your Dad’s Wimpy 30 weight. An enormous & luscious dark ale that’s as opaque and dark as the most well used motor oils.

Bomber into tulip. Darkest brown; thick, poofy mocha head. Smells of dark chocolate, marzipan, leather, metal shavings, cherry and blackberry. Predominant dark ryebread and charred plum flavor… hugely roasty, bitter black malt, plasticy phenols and solventlike alohol. A bit one-dimensional. Where’s the oak? Creamy, sugary palate. Espresso finish. Why isn’t this called imperial stout? Totally off the mark for ASA. In pursuit of a super black, super alcohol beer, some quality was lost.

Alengrin (1801) - BELGIUM - SEP 28, 2014
Californian provision ale with deep brownish beige, creamy, thin head and blackish colour with a wine-red hue which becomes visible only under bright light. Complex aroma of coffee, dry sherry, fondant, bitter chocolate, liquorice, whisky, pistachio nuts, vanilla, sweet paprika, banana, wood, orange peel. Candied fruits, banana and walnuts in the mouth, spicy notes (pepper, bayleaf), smooth and syrupy, thick mouthfeel, powdery too, finish complex with oaky tannins, assertive American citrussy hops, some cloying sweetness an warming, bourbon-like alcohol. Very rich and tasteful beer, somewhere between an old ale and an imperial porter.

Kinda more of a imp stout, but not as roasty, but not as hoppy or red like a Double Bastard. Great brew but doesnt seem to fit in this go around. Really thick hence the name. Really good too.

Pours black/very dark brown with a large tan head. Nose shows cocoa, toasty malt, figs and nutty malt. Flavours include more roast, sweet burnt toast, some pine and resin. Too highly carbonated.

750 mL bottle. I’m assuming that this is mis-labelled here. It’s not an ASA. Or a barleywine, which is what the name led me to believe. Way too much dark/chocolate/black/roasted malt flavour. If I had to label it I’d say it’s a double black IPA. And a darn good one.

Bottle. Black colour and beige head. Aroma and taste of hard roasted malts, espresso, liquirice and a bit dark chocolate. Very silky smooth, warm and well balanced. This one is superb!

Beautiful pitch bleach thick looking brew with a nice froth latte head on top. Milk chocolate bitter coffee bean nose. Silky thick , slightly bitter with a long slight numbing taste.

Looks like motor oil. Huge spongy head. Licorice sweetness with an espresso end. Massive beer. Leaves a very bitter roasted taste that lingers forever. Nice.
