3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft @ GABF. On a day where I had so many great beers, this one jsut didn’t shine as bright. Big oaky vanilla, boozy bourbon, cocoa, some marshmellow, dark fruits, quite sweet. Boozy bitter finish.

Several servings at GABF. Pours ink black with half finger of foam. Smell of vanilla, prunes, cotton candy. Tastes of vanilla, bourbon, raisin, cloves, with a sweet finish and mild EtOH. Mouthfeel is thick and wonderful. Overall, amazing beer!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 18/20
2009 vintage thanks to nate321. Cork opens up without much fanfare... bummer. Pours a really, really dark brown with no head and still looking. Aroma is nice with wood, bourbon, vanilla. Taste is sweet but not too much with nice caramel and alcohol flavors. Some charred malt notes. I thought the absence of carbonation would disturb me but it is not really the case... It is actually really fun to drink and slick. Nice one! Not sure what was up with the carbonation, though.

3.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
’11 Vintage (6/1/2012)
Appearance: Pitch black, no head, no lacing.
Smell: Bourbon sweetness, vanilla, molasses.
Taste: Thick, sticky. Bourbon but not nearly as sweet as BCBS and not even close to KBS. Lots of bourbon, maybe too much. If it’s this boozy with a year on it, I can only imagine how boozy it is fresh.
Finish: Some dark chocolate. Malt. Woodiness. A bit of burn. More sweetness as it warms, but more burn as well.
Overall: Not as complex as other barrel-aged brews. I feel like I should have drank an Old Viscosity first to see how the barrel aging adds or covers elements of the base beer. I’ve come to feel that barrel aging needs to enhance or add to the complexities of a beer otherwise it just ends up being overly boozy, like someone splashed bourbon in a stout for no good reason.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a deep rich burnt sienna almost black color with a finger of eggshell gaseous foam. The nose is full of big bourbon notes, boozy raisin, sweet caramel and a touch of vanilla. The palate follows with big burnt caramel sweetness that mingles nicely with the heavy oak bourbon notes. Lots of rustic earthy notes in the background and a long sugary boozy finish.

Bottle @ BeerTemple, Amsterdam.
Pours a flat thick ebony brown.
Toffee nose, some hazelnut, boozy!
Rich taste, roasted caramel, Sacher Torte with grappa it seems. Lingers nicely.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Powerful brew and not for the weak. Strong aroma of bourbon and molasses. It smelled thick. Very dark with no head. Poured like syrup. Bourbon was the first and most powerful flavor and a little overwhelming. Man, this was heavy. It almost felt like I was drinking liquid malt extract. Other flavors were molasses, wood, caramelized sugar and some chocolate. This was rich and a little one sided but still a good sipper.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: DEC 2, 2013 Bottle: black, inky pour. Not much head at first, but a quick swirl brings forth a nice, tan, creamy froth. Aroma is sweet chocolates, smooth bourbon, and heavy oak. I love the battle between the sweet chocolate fudge notes and the warm bourbon oak... Very well balanced. Mild vanilla and coconut inclusion from the barrel, too. The beer is incredibly smooth, thick body; chewy. Fudge cake flavor with bourbon, molasses drizzle all over. Oak and dark cocoa beans with a twinge of roast and very mild smoke in the finish. Full of bourbon but still very smooth. This stuff is great.
