4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Guest tap at FFF poured into snifter. Appearance is deep brown with no translucent edges. A small tan head forms, then collapses to a thin remnant that lasts the session - which took a while. This was a textbook sipper. The aroma is barrel-forward: coconut, charred oak, vanilla, brown sugar, and booze. Below that are coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and ripe plum. Taste is lead by toasted coconut and the barrel notes - all washed in alcohol. Moderate sweetness comes next in the form of vanilla, molasses, and chocolate. Some bitter licorice and oak flavors come late. Full bodied, thick, oily, and chewy texture, minimal carbonation, long sweet boozy finish.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, 2012. Black with tiny mocha head - yep, looks viscous. Heavy sweet bourbon nose, chocolate, caramel and thick syrupy dark fruit too. Bourbon is big in the taste, plenty of cocoa, figs, and sweet caramel. Some thicker roastier coffee comes through, decent dark roast malt. Full bodied, a sipper. Booze well integrated. Sweet bourbon lingers with a touch of dark chocolate. Pricey, but excellent.

Dark brown almost black with a brownish head quickly fading. Intense aromas of blackstrap molasses, tar, soy sauce. Hint of a carbonation, almost full bodied, sweet, alcohol, burnt sugar palate. Finishes with a light astringency. Great sipper!

Lovely beer. Full body, quite a lot of alcohol but not bothering, soft carbo. Amazing beer. Worth my 15 euro.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 22.12.2013, 0,375l bottle (2009 vintage) @ home:
No head, completely flat. Aroma is rich and sweet, mild bourbon, vanilla, dark sugar, dark malts, licorice, caramel, dark chocolate. Taste is slightly sweet, mild bourbon, licorice, dark sugar, dark malts, vanilla, oak, caramel, Medium bitterness "flat" mouthfeel. Very nice, even though the lack of carbonation, and therefore also a nice brown head, is kind of a turnoff compared to other similar beers.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Yet again, I’m allured to the potential of Tomme. Deep breath.
A: Pull the cage off the cork and give the cork a firm twist and tug, the bitch barely moves. Finally work it off to an underwhelming "oop" of cork expanding out the mouth of the bottle. Pours out a dark, dark maduro ale with a sheet of transient cocoa foam. The foam disappears in a few seconds to leave a rim of the same bordering a mirrored surface over this darky. No lace.
S: Oak, licorice, black cherry, molasses and dark malts. Some sweet bourbon notes. Kinda has a cake smell on it.
T: Hot as hell. The alcohol is the first thing I notice. Then toasted cocoa and coffee alongside some vanilla notes and just a whiff of coconut. Some nice bourbon tones. Really, really potent.
M: Thick and viscous (fancy that), carbonated (fancy that!!), an oddly sticky yet dry finish.
O: So here’s the thing, I can drink this, and would say it’s a decent beer. I would argue it is overpriced compared to similar beers. The barrels really come through stronger than I prefer, but they are exactly that - barrels previously having held alcohol. Would I drink again? Absolutely. Will I purchase another bottle? If I find one at the same price ($17/375ml) that is at least two years old then I will. Otherwise, this one can sit on the shelves.
