3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Powerful brew and not for the weak. Strong aroma of bourbon and molasses. It smelled thick. Very dark with no head. Poured like syrup. Bourbon was the first and most powerful flavor and a little overwhelming. Man, this was heavy. It almost felt like I was drinking liquid malt extract. Other flavors were molasses, wood, caramelized sugar and some chocolate. This was rich and a little one sided but still a good sipper.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: DEC 2, 2013 Bottle: black, inky pour. Not much head at first, but a quick swirl brings forth a nice, tan, creamy froth. Aroma is sweet chocolates, smooth bourbon, and heavy oak. I love the battle between the sweet chocolate fudge notes and the warm bourbon oak... Very well balanced. Mild vanilla and coconut inclusion from the barrel, too. The beer is incredibly smooth, thick body; chewy. Fudge cake flavor with bourbon, molasses drizzle all over. Oak and dark cocoa beans with a twinge of roast and very mild smoke in the finish. Full of bourbon but still very smooth. This stuff is great.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2011 bottle drank Sep 2013. One of the bottles that started my cellar. Pours nearly black with just a little coming through brown. No head and but some legs. The aroma so big, rich, and many dimensioned. It lingers in your nose with bourbon, soy, some nuts and chocolate. The flavor is intense, deep, and evolves from rich sweet boozy chocolate with lots of soy and syrupy middle and bitter cocoa and roasty end. The feel is sticky syrup thinned by booze. It’s very warming, almost hot. Just wow. This is one my favorite beers in a while. Hits on everything I want from a big old bourbon barrel aged stout. It’s a stout right I’m gonna call it one cuz it basically is. Drank next to an Old Viscosity of the same age is interesting. I drank most of the Old first and found it not to have aged much in comparison. The Older is more still, more hot, much more soy and umami, and has even more dimension. Love it.

Well I’ll be honest, I expected more. More bourbon. More heaven. More balance. Not bad by any means, but this caliber of beer was left too low.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours very dark brown with rapidly settling brown head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is strong bourbon, slightly sharp, vanilla, boozy, bourbon sweet with a mild roast, chocolate finish. Quite sweet, fruity undertones, slight char aftertaste. Moderate carbonation, medium to full body, and smooth texture. Seems a little thin and watery. A sweet bourbon beer. Again a solid offering, though it isn’t a rich or full as Uncle Jacob’s. Solid but not really worth the price.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours black with a minimal mocha head. Swirling it leaves small lacerations in the glass. Aroma is raisins, plum, caramel, dates, figs, vanilla, slight notes of tobacco, leather and smoke. Could sniff this all day long. Taste is caramel, honey, raisins, dates, figs with hints of vanilla, tar, tobacco, bourbon. Aftertaste is dried fruits, smoke and hints of black peppercorn along with some slight warming alcohol. Just magnificent!!
