12.7-oz bottle Lost Abbey (2010) - Aroma: bourbon, vanilla, oak, maple syrup; Appearance: opaque, jet black color, brown head, some laces; Flavor: salty, sweet, bourbon, molasses, brown sugar, cherries, chocolate, fudge ; Mouthfeel: full bodied, silky, soft carbonation; Overall: awesome, wonderful strong alcoholic (no harshness) beer with extreme of oak, vanilla, and bourbon aromas and flavors, which leads the imagination towards cherries, dark chocolate, fudge, and dark fruits. The only reason this beer is hard to drink is because youíll want to keep smelling it. Definitely worth the money.

The normal Old Viscosity is already ambrosia but this one is a step beyond. Have had it several times in past years (only ever on draft) but this is my first time rating it. Draft at Monks Cafe. Pitch black pour with a dark brown head. Rich chocolate bourbon notes off the top. Swoon-worthy. Perfect silky body. Deep chocolate mousse. Creme brule. Charcoal grill. Burnt marshmallows. Red leather. Fig. Molasses. Heady alcohol, but so creamy a finish that it merely provides a glorious haze to the experience. Probably my favorite stout of all time (next to maybe only the Bourbon Barrel Angel Share, which is a close cousin.) Nearly a perfect mix of pitch black dark with a rich chocolate cream. The Bourbon only heightens the experience. SEEK THIS OUT!!!

Wow! I let this age several months which might have affected the experience. Dark pour like motor oil with a small tan head. Aroma of oak, chocolate, malt, bourbon. Flavor was magnificent with oak, bourbon, chocolate, malt, honey. The finish was smooth yet tingly from the alcohol.

On tap at port. Dark brown with creamy tan head. Aroma of coffee, bourbon, and chocolate with roasty notes. Fine silky palate. Nice spicy chocolate, nutty, bourbon and vanilla taste with a slightly alcoholic finish.

I forget who sent me this beer, it was a while ago...thanks. From notes: Pours completely still, and of course is completely black. It is not, however, as black as some other big stouts out there. Smells chocolatey, with vanilla and bourbon coming through loud and clear. Alcohol is noticeable. This beer tastes as good as any BA stout. The bourbon barrel flavor would be too much in another beer, but this one has a vast richness of other flavors as well. Lots of chocolate. Mouthfeel is full-bodied and coating. Truly one of the GOAT.

Rating #100.....finally an excuse to open this one.

Bottle via mailorder from Joey at South Bay Drugs And Liquor.

Appearance
Pours like motor oil 10,000 miles past when it should have been changed with a small yet bubbly light brown head.

Smell
Aroma of bourbon, chocolate, roasted coffee beans, toasted barley, malt, and some hints of fruits.

Taste
Wow, this rich bourbony beast has a nice decadent chocolate, roasty coffee, bourbon all in wonder flavor going on. The mouthfeel is very full and amazing and the flavors all come together into a blissful co-existance. Notes of fruits linger at the finish but donít overpower the other desirable flavors of this beast.

Final Thoughts
Iím very glad that I chose this as #100, it did not let me down in any way. This simply put is an amazing brew in a class of itís own. Simply an amazing world class brew!!!

UPDATED: AUG 14, 2010 Draft at Teresaís. Pours deep mahogany brown with an oily, slick surface and a razor thin white lacy head. Aroma is very similar to Angelís Share; bourbon, oak, vanilla, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and roasty malts. Body is full and rich, but not as thick as expected. Silky, slightly smokey palate. Finish has a touch of hop bitterness and a nice warming in the throat. Excellent American strong.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2010 I purchased this for $16 for a single bottle from a liquor store in the San Diego area, consumed with a friend in Portland, OR. When I purchased this, it was something my future wife just threw in the basket because the RateBeer small advertisement next to it said 100 rating. When I was in line, I saw the price and almost put it back. Iím very happy I didnít! Aroma consisted of brandy, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, toffee, very sweet and it felt like there was 1000 aromas going on at the same time. Appearance is black with a thin brown head. Taste consisted of chocolate, very sweet, alcohol is definitely in the mix with a bourbon base, coconut, etc. As with the aroma, thereís about 1000 things going on with this beer and itís very smooth...the ingredients arenít fighting each other. Very happy that I was able to have this.

This has been one of my white whales for a long time, really glad it finally made it out to chicago. Has a strange astringent red vinegar smell, but looks great. Wow, amazingly pleasant smooth complex taste. Butterscotch, plum, nutmeg, sherry, and fig. So smooth...almost too smooth, the mouthfeel could be creamier and slightly more bourbon bite. Overall, its still amazing and worth the price if you see it.
