Barrel-aged version of Port Brewing Santas Little Helper.
2009 will be the inaugural release of this winter time classic. After brewing the 2008 batch of Santa’s we thought “wonder what this would taste like aged in a bourbon barrel?”

Bottle shared by deyholla, thanks derek! Pours near black with deep mahogany edges when held to the light and a white soapy head that lasts on the edge. Nose is sweet bourbon and chocolate; rich malts with mild booze and chocolate sweets. Taste is similar. Delicious sweet malts, chocolate and a VERY smooth and well balanced bourbon to lend complexity and cutting note. This is my style of brew!

Bottle at tasting. Rich aroma of creamy vanilla, cinnamon, chocolate and mild liquorice. Taste is quite full, with sweet vanilla, cinnamon, chocolate, spices and a nice booze kick in the finish. Awesome.

2011 Bottle. Aroma: Bourbon vanilla, deep and dark chocolate, wood. Palate: Lovely soft, creamy mouth feel with some heat. Flavor: Rich, dark chocolate with vanilla and bourbon, some alcohol warmth kicks in mid-way, wood. Comment: Four years of age has undoubtedly mellowed this some and allowed the chocolate, bourbon, wood and vanilla flavors to come together. This could still age a few more years if one wanted a drier version, but it’s quite good now.

Bottle to snifter. Appearance: opaque black with a thin tan/caramel head. Aroma: chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oak, coffee, dried cherries. Taste: big chocolate forward taste... Kiss the bourbon and accentuating flavors present in the aroma. Palate: smooth, mellow carbonation, a bit too alcohol-y on the backend. Very good bourbon stout, but not one of the best.

Poured from a bottle, vintage 2010. Aroma is moderately chocolate forward with light roast notes. A bit of oak character with some light anise notes and lighter dark fruit. A bit of leather and tobacco. Medium light alcohol spice. A hint of cardboard and honey. Pours black and a bit oily with a faint, pretty much nonexistent mocha head that recedes quickly. Faint lacing and moderate legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with a large amount of chocolate upfront. Medium light roast notes with some light oak character. Some moderate dark fruit character with plum and prune. Light anise notes. Light honey notes and sherry with a touch of cardboard. Sweeter than the non oak character. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, in some ways a better beer than the non oak version but in other ways worse. The lack of carbonation and extra sweetness isn’t great, but the fruit and malt notes are better. The alcohol is oddly enough, better hidden than the non oak version. The astringency and ash notes seem lighter as well.

Draft at Port Brewing / The Lost Abbey. Poured a very dark, almost black color, rich and creamy. Aroma was lots of bourbon, vanilla, woody oak, chocolate, roasted malts, and dried fruits. Flavor was a sweet chocolates, coffee, malts, and dried fruit. Very smooth, nicely balanced imperial, rich and smooth. Easy drinking.

A- pours a deep dark brown with a medium mocha head that lingers. S- chocolate, coffee and cocoa all come first. Oak, bourbon, peanuts, toffee, vanilla. Mild honey. Everything seems quite decadent. Alcohol burns slightly. M- medium oily body with mild carb. T- rich dark chocolate up front. Cocoa, vanilla, chalk, earth and coffee in the middle. Ending is alcohol, nuts, graham crackers, wood and some grasses. A minor zinc sting. Good offering and straight forward. Probably shouldn't have opened this on a summer night when it was 100 degrees out. Most likely an amazing winter beer.
