Barrel-aged version of Port Brewing Santas Little Helper.
2009 will be the inaugural release of this winter time classic. After brewing the 2008 batch of Santa’s we thought “wonder what this would taste like aged in a bourbon barrel?”

Very dark brown beer, small dark beige head. Roasted malts, vanilla, raisins, ripe fruits and sweet alcohol aroma. A bit flat, low carbonation. Bourbon/vanilla/wood and sweet alcohol. A hint of sweet cherries, licorice. Good one, although I expected a bit more body.

Bottle. 0.375l: Pours black color, opaque, with tiny, foamy light brown head. Visually low carbonation. Aroma: intense malt aroma, with coffee, bittersweet chocolate like character, with notes of dark fruits, like resins, prunes, intense bourbon aroma, with hints of oak, tobacco and some vanilla. Flavor: intense and rich high malt flavors which takes on coffee, bittersweet chocolate and cocoa powder. They are very well balanced with fruity esters, which takes on dried dark fruits, like prunes, resins and are supported with vanilla. Malt backbone is very firm, supported with moderate strong bourbon and oak woody flavors. Finish is sticky / dry, body is full, texture is smooth, carbonation is low. Alcohol is obvious. For sure big American barrell aged doubble stout. It is very proper for cellar.

Bottle. Thick layer of dark chocolate, pierced by brown sugar and pumpernikel, vanilla, bourbon and dry wood. Fantastic complexity and depth, wonderfully integrated.

Backlog. Pours an inky black without any head. Aromas of fudge and cinnamon and vanilla. Taste is a bit of heat from bourbon, sweet. Medium thick body and low carb.

650ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Bit hazy black color. Small size, brown head, stays. Raisins, plums, bourbon, woody, bit minty in aroma. Quite lovely aroma. Roast, bourbon, alcohol, plums, deep roast, woody in taste. Bourbon and oak give out impression of coconut in aftertaste. Nice full body. Alcohol is high and is there and you can’t miss it. Despite of that still very drinkable. Very enjoyable brew.

Very pleasant vanilla aroma. Alas a bit of a boozy waft. Nice and dark, basically black. Tastes pretty wafty - there’s a tonne of booze here. Very sweet drying hops, not even so pleasant to sip, it’s so hot. Tastes worse and worse as it warms, drink this as quickly as you can. Or drink a decent dark beer, and slam an 8oz bottle of whisky at the same time. Possibly decent beer with booze added.

Bottle at tasting. Rich aroma of creamy vanilla, cinnamon, chocolate and mild liquorice. Taste is quite full, with sweet vanilla, cinnamon, chocolate, spices and a nice booze kick in the finish. Awesome.

2011 Bottle. Aroma: Bourbon vanilla, deep and dark chocolate, wood. Palate: Lovely soft, creamy mouth feel with some heat. Flavor: Rich, dark chocolate with vanilla and bourbon, some alcohol warmth kicks in mid-way, wood. Comment: Four years of age has undoubtedly mellowed this some and allowed the chocolate, bourbon, wood and vanilla flavors to come together. This could still age a few more years if one wanted a drier version, but it’s quite good now.

Bottle to snifter. Appearance: opaque black with a thin tan/caramel head. Aroma: chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oak, coffee, dried cherries. Taste: big chocolate forward taste... Kiss the bourbon and accentuating flavors present in the aroma. Palate: smooth, mellow carbonation, a bit too alcohol-y on the backend. Very good bourbon stout, but not one of the best.
