Bien noire ..

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2008 bottle, thanks a lot Scheffel! Pours pitch black with an off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, sweet candy, vanilla, brown sugar, melasses, dark chocolate, notes of coffee. Taste is thinner than the aroma indicates, light roasted malts, dark chocolate, vanilla, sweet finish. Doesn’t seem old at all.

From the 650 ml. bottle with a smudged stamped marking. Might be a date. Not sure. It pours almost black with a frothy, long lasting tan head. The aroma has wonderful roasted malt, mild chocolate, and barley notes with mellow hops and no booze. Smooth medium to bold body. The taste begins with a milk chocolate and malt sweetness and then the bitterness roars forward at the finish and leaves a kind of dry bite.

Excellent stout...I sure didn’t expect it! Paid 99 cents for this bomber out of a bargain bin and I’m glad I did.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Black beer with big brown head, medium and small bubbles, some lacing.
Aroma: coffe, sweet chocolate, cocoa, booze, porto/sherry notes.
Taste: medium to high sweet, cocoa, dried fruits (light sour), high roasted-boozy bitterness.
Palate: medium body, medium saturation (too high for RIS for me), alcoholy.
Overall: Might be good dry RIS but definitly need cellaring for at least few more months. Too boozy.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours black color, haze, with light brown foamy head. Aroma is rich, intense, with strong note of malt, which takes on coffee, bittersweet chocolate, with gentle note of roasted malt, supported with candy sugar and fruity note of hops, which takes on prunes, plums.
Favor is also rich, intense, with prevailing malt flavors, which takes on coffee, dark chocolate, with hint of vanilla, gentle, but obvious flavor of roasted malts. Malt backbone is supported witht hop flavor, which is slightly spicy. Malt sweetness is high, hop bitterness also, finish is sticky dry and slightly spicy bitter, lingering in aftertaste.
Body is full, alcohol warmth is normal for American versions of imperial stouts, texture is silky, smooth, carbonation is low.
Personally I prefer more barrell aged version.
