Pours dark as night with a two and a half finger mocha colored head that dissipates slowly and leaves a wonderful, thick lacing. Just a beautiful looking beer with an impressive head for a strong beer. Smells of bittersweet chocolate, some expresso, vanilla, some hoppy notes like grass or floral when it warms, lots of roasted breadiness as well some brown sugar sweetness. Taste starts with the bittersweet chocolate, expresso, some vanilla. In the middle, tons of roasted and bready malt shine through that smooths out the bitter chocolate and expresso. The finish then turns a little more bitter. This time it’s from the hops, not the bittersweet chocolate. Also get the expresso, chocolate, roasted flavors, some brown sugar, maybe some peat. As it warms more of the hop characters show through and you get more floral notes on the finish as well. Pretty full body with a very creamy and rich mouthfeel. Nothing Christmasy about this, just a great, rich imperial stout.

Bottle: very dense, light head and just a little lace. Very lifted. Fruity, chocolate, clean, saturated, power, brooding. Very rich, almost dry, hint of bitterness, not sour. Massive flavor. Great power. Very long. Pretty good example.

Bottle. Pitch black with a large, off-white and frothy head. Roasted malts, caramel, chocolate and a tiny bit of liquorice. Moderately sweet and slightly acidic with a long, dry finish.

2014 edition. Poured from a bomber into a snifter on 01.21.15. A: Cocoa, brown sugar, and milk chocolate. A: 3 finger light brown foamy head that is retained. Nice bubbles wash up like it’s on nitro. Midnight black body with no red in the glass. T: Light cocoa and brown sugar dominate. Vinegar and a lingering nuttiness are subtle. P: Who cares. O: The vinegar flavor is there enough to distract from the other flavors. Maybe it was Acetobacter? This was a drain pour.

Christmas stout, black with mahogany edges, under a deep beige, medium thick, moussy head. Quite powerful aroma of cured meat and smoked bacon, espresso, bitter chocolate, meat broth, candied figs, banana, vanilla, dry madera wine, grandmother’s sticky candi syrup I still associate with pancakes, black pepper, tobacco, candi sugar, wet leather, chocolate cake, mocha ice cream, blueberries, soy sauce. Refinedly sweet onset, candi syrup accent, candied fruits, pointy and tangy, soft carbo, smooth, oily and thick mouthfeel as usual for the style, yeasty and meaty, wheaty sourish touch and a certain hint of saltiness like liquorice candy, after which thick layers of maltiness unfold, nutty, bitterly chocolatey and roasted, especially in the finish where a thick coffee-like bitterness is confronted with a peppery, spicy, pungent hop bitterness and bourbon-like, warming alcohol; the liquorice-like ’saltiness’ lingers a bit too deep in the background. In all, nothing surprising in the context of its particular style, but - as usual from this brewery - very well crafted and satisfying. Ideal sipper for a cold winter afternoon.

A tremendous beer, if something of a palate wrecker. Huge aromas of chocolate, licorice, coffee, brown sugar. Sharp initial hop attack, followed by those flavors. A touch of booze, in a nice sipping way. Made to pair with dessert or as late night sipper.

Nice spicy aroma with a hint of cinnamon. Pours dark with a foamy light brown head. Full of flavour. Dark malts, chocolate, smoky roast nuts and black licorice. A little overwhelming by the end, not the most pleasant mouthfeel.

Bottle at home. Shared with @Meilby. Thanks!!! - Poured a clear dark with a fair brown head. Smells of coffee and delicious darkness. Tastes oily, balanced and slightly sweet with a slight bitterness at the end. This is excellent.
